and another one on the wrong blog
Instagram seems to keep posting to my other blog regardless of what I change in the settings so here's a permalink instead: https://the-modern-critic.tumblr.com/post/185197860132/it-was-good-to-get-some-interaction-and-feedback

45 minutes of uninterrupted signal destructive video art (minus a few dropped frames)

Video

First day of showing and experimentation with the full set up I have been planning and designing for the last few months.
it was good to see the effects in a large dark space and i think this really added to the experience and it defiantly creates a different feeling from my bedroom desk.
i was able to do most of what i wanted to achieve today but there is definitely more i can do tomorrow, for instance i did not incorporate the vision mixer/fx unit to add another opportunity for interactivity alongside the camera feedback loop
another thing i would like to do is get a continuous recording of an hour or more to show the gradual destruction of the source signal over time caused by the re recording of the vhs tape
i feel that today had been very successful and i am pleased that i have been able to realise what stated out as a vague idea based around signal destruction and playing with analogue gear.

Good news bad news and good news again
So the good news!
I have the audio tape loops prepared for Monday and I think it’s going to add a lot to the showing.
And the bad news...
The vhs player I had modified the tension arms on to play the tape loops had died and I don’t think there will be time to make another one befor Monday but not all is lost.
And finally the good news returns again.
I have decided to re record the output to vhs periodically in order to create the signal destruction rather than using the loop, the proses will be similar to when you photo copy something over and over again and begin to lose detail and create artifacts.
Although using this method will loose the visual spectical of the tape loops it will still retain the same effect and as a positive it will give me documented points throughout the signal destruction that I can look back at and analyse.

update on space booking
The booking for the tv studio has been confirmed for the 13th and 14th and i will be arranging to bring in equipment for PAT testing next week

DaVinci resolve crashes
after installing the latest build of resolve I keep running into this problem of DaVinci crashing on startup, I believe that after reading through this that it may be a problem with audio drivers, hopefully updating these may fix the issue.

progress on booking space
I am now waiting on final confirmation of the booking for the 13th and 14th of May, one of the problems I have run in to is using my own electrical equipment within the tv studio space. any electrical equipment that will be plugged into mains power will have to be pat tested (both detachable cable and unit) to get around this the college had several analogue monitors I can use, but I will still have to look into getting the VHS players small vision mixer and projector pat tested in order to use them.

Hear are a few videos I tried in the style of jame jenkinson, I really like the feel of these clips and I think I will use them as some of the footage on the vhs tape loop
Link to playlist on YouTube: will add one finished uploading

Jamie Jenkinson
Repost from last week after I deleted it without noticing.
Jamie Jenkinson is an experimental video artist who works primarily with Iphones with the main aim of his work being to try and expose the errors and artifact` found in digital video, this is often achieved by shaking the camera to throw images out of focus.
after watching some of his work i think there are several core ideas that i am also hoping to represent within my work such as the reliance more on texture and colour than composition to invoke feeling, a good example of this is the clip linked below titled #CC0000
http://www.jamiejohnjamesjenkinson.com/2014/12/blog-post_24.html
when I showed this clip to several members of my class they all said it gave them an explainable feeling of unease because of the movement created by the static and noise

camera positioning to create feedback fractals
https://doi.org/10.1080/0010751021000029598
this is a link to an article titled “Fractals in pixellated video feedback” that appeared in issue 44 of the Contemporary physics journal published in 200.
this article looks in tow how camera positioning can be used to exploit the pixelization of a monitor in order to generate stationary fractals, this is an affect that is only possible on digital displays, achieving this on and analogue CRT requires the use of angled reflections due to the way the picture is generated with scan lines.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB9n2gHsHN4
this is a video that explains the maths behind the generation of fractals and why there generation is rarely self-similar, non self-similar fractals are what lead to the flowing and constantly evolving patterns on CRTs

disintegration loops
through my research into analogue signal destruction in video, my attention has been drawn to the destruction loops, a phenomenon that has recently been revived by several ambient musicians, that involves the disruption of audio signals through the destruction of the magnetic recording surface of the tape.
this concept was originally sparked by the disintegration loops made by William Basinski. while archiving old tapes Basinski noticed that the magnetic surface material began to flake off when the tape passed the play heads creating a natural sounding degradation in sound quality with parts of the recorded music flaking off altogether to progressively create an entirely new sound.
this idea has now been purposefully recreated by musicians such as Heinbach and Simon the magpie, because of the unpredictability of the destruction prosses the outcomes produced are different every time and serve as a way of generating a unique starting point for music creation.
I am hoping to experiment with tape loops myself and use the unpredictability to illustrate the way that even completely uncontrollable randomness can be used to create something with a sense of order with the intent of giving others a resource to do the same
