This time I give myself a lot more time: to learn the language, to do more wondering and wandering without plans, opening my eyes and ears to subtle nuances. . It’s a little tough with the heat: too hot between 11 AM and 6PM. It would be hard to give up seven hours of not exploring when you’re on a short visit, but this “not rushing” was exactly what I was looking for. Going home in the dark . made of layers of elements I’ve been snapping without rhyme or reason, driven only by my need to remember things I see that excites me: light, human figure, mist, texture, water movement, botanical forms, etc. . there’s always a “someday I will make something out of these” in my mind when it comes time to clean up my archive and I can’t let go of what “good photographers” consider junk because they’re blurry, noisy, over/under exposed, not really saying anything… . so here’s a first photo collage , a coming together of months of processing in my head + pages and pages of mark-making exercises on paper with various media + watching others going through their processes. It feels like coming home after a long walk in the dark without having a clear idea of when or where I will arrive. I’m happy to be there. The weather has been cold and dreary here, it feels much like confinement. I’ve been staying inside, playing with paint, exploring color-mixing and mark-making. Every step is an exploration, way-finding by feel, much like walking without destination, simply to go through the experience and observing how I react to what I encounter. It has been a wonderful way of keeping my mind active in a peaceful way, much like leisurely roaming. . It’s another picture of tree! But wait... . It’s my first post in 2021! What’s new for me this year is a rekindled interest in fiddling with paint and paper! I signed up for a couple of online classes during the holidays and it’s been fun. . I still walk around gawking at trees, but the trees now also make it onto my paper & paint fun. While waiting for a layer to dry, I browse art books I’ve collected over the years and found inspiration. Not a bad way to keep myself amused. . 1. The tree I passed this evening on my way to pick up dinner. It’s more satisfying than my dinner but I think the craving for a takeout was just the universe calling me outside. - 2. What came out of following guidance from @laurahornart in her “Minimal Magic” class. She’s such a wonderful teacher with calming influence. - 3. @cecilbalmond (in his book: Elements) beautifully wrote about that feeling that goes through me when I’m looking at things, especially when I notice pattern in nature. Last sunset of the year. . . I’m so glad I went out to see this so I can say that 2020 ended with beauty... which has been true for my small life. . Despite everything, I experienced so many perfect timing for many things to happen that keep me feeling so blessed. I love the very few people I get to cluster with in real life in our new way of living, and thankful to witness the joy of my many loved ones faraway via technology. . It’s pretty hard to envision how the new year is going to be. I kind of don’t know how to dream anymore because most of my dreams are about exploring new places and culture and who knows when it will be safe again to travel. Still, I feel fortunate for everything I have. . To everyone who’s been keeping in touch with me here, thank you for all those meaningful conversations via DM. You guys made me feel supported. This must be the place . Who’s old enough to remember that #talkingheads song? . I was in college, new to America, when I discovered Talking Heads and I was excited to hear something so unusual to my ear. . 📷This was a rare instance that I wandered around in the evening because the days have been too hot for me 🥵 and I saw this neon studio in my neighborhood that I’ve never noticed before during the day. . Keep your eyes peeled for possible delight in your path! . Shot on my routine walk around the neighborhood. Sometimes the slightest difference in time of day gives me a new perspective of everything I’ve seen before. . I’ve seen this plant go through it’s cycle in the last few years I’ve lived here. The changes keep me hopeful and in faith that things pass, evolve, come around, grow, bloom, wilt, die (yes we do!) and life just keeps going. Where and how am I fitting myself in all of life?
