I tend to think of these as ‘inverted’ pictures: Forms that I could have painted black but instead worked in a reductive way (from an off-white starting point to a largely black finish) until the forms emerge and the painting largely completes itself. At a certain point the main motifs emerge and I can then add white or remove black until the image works. I’m finding it quite a satisfying way to paint.

#Hartigan was often thought of as a “second generation Abstract Expressionist”, being heavily influenced by her colleagues of the time. Her early career was characterized by experiments with total abstraction, as seen in the work Six by Six (1951) currently in the collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Beginning in the early fifties, Hartigan began to incorporate more recognizable motifs and characters into her paintings.

Also during this time, she exhibited under the name George Hartigan in an attempt to achieve greater recognition for her work.

She started to use Grace as her first name in 1953.

And here we are again... Loki is currently enjoying this piece as is. I love the black-yellow color combination, and I'm not sure I can explain why. Anyway, right now, this painting resembles Fear, a series of minimalist abstract paintings I painted a few years ago (I have a few of them posted on my art account), and I'm still planning on moving forward and continuing work on this painting, even though I'm really loving the look right now.

By the way, I don't usually think to mention my art account here since these aren't promotional pieces, but anyone wanting to see more abstract art can check out @karenreiser.

Lenore “Lee” Krasner (born Lena Krassner; Oct 27, 1908 – Jun 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage.

She received her early academic training at the Women's Art School of Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design from 1928 to 1932. Krasner's exposure to Post-Impressionism at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art in 1929 led to a sustained interest in modern art.

During the Great Depression, Krasner joined the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, transitioning to war propaganda artworks during the War Services era.

The late 1950s to the early 1960s in Krasner's work were characterized by a more expressive and gestural style. In her later years, she received broader artistic and commercial recognition and shifted toward large horizontal paintings marked by hard-edge lines and bright contrasting colors. via Wikipedia | Krasner in 1983
