Aaaah, but it’ll be so long, anon! The question is, Baku or Gem? … OTP is one true pairing, so I’ll go Gem. Also I have a few conflicting headcanons, so… XD

… Also a lot of them read like storylines/plots. Ahaha… ha….

1) (I submitted this to YGO headcanons already, heh ~) The original spirit of the Thief King is trapped in the Ring as well. When Ryou is out of control of the body (Yami no Bakura taking over), they exist together. Because of their situations, they can sympathize with each other.

2) If the Thief King is revived postcanon, he is originally distrusting of Ryou because he recognizes him as Yami no Bakura (through the magic of the TRPG and his piece, he has bits and pieces of memories from the original game). This misconception is quickly cleared up after Ryou takes him in.

3) If the Thief King is revived, Ryou doesn’t know who he is, but just happens to befriend him/take him in by chance (possibly through volunteer work or something? I’d have to think closely about that…). It’s an earth-shattering revelation for him to find out who the Thief King is.

4) The Thief King is revived with no memories and no idea of his past. Again, Ryou takes him in - his existence becomes a well-kept secret from Yuugi-tachi.

5) When Yami no Bakura appears in front of Ryou, he appears as he was, not as he appears to us, the audience. This is how Ryou knows what he looks like (does this count as Tender or Gem? Hmm…)

6) For a time, post-canon, Ryou will sometimes wake up to valuables on the desk in his room that he doesn’t remember acquiring.

7) The Thief King becomes protective to the point of obsessed with Ryou when he finds out that there’s a chance he came from his bloodline, no matter how remote that chance will be.

8) The Thief King tends to call him possessive names and slightly objectifying names like “my pet”, “my silver”. It makes Ryou uncomfortable because it reminds him of the spirit.

9) The Thief King was the spirit after losing Zorc’s stain on his soul. However, Ryou doesn’t truly believe this until he puts his life on the line for him, this time without immortality or Ryou being his ‘host body’ as an excuse for his actions.

Help I’m up to the Duelist Kingdom semifinals in my extremely slow subbed YGO marathon and it’s giving me weird shipping feels. Also I could claim it’s some kind of symbolism that Yuugi and Yami look like they’re about to accidentally strangle each other, but it was actually just really poor planning. Necklace-sharing and weird… idk, jaw-stroking or something.

I like how you describe the yugioh fandom as a crack mansion. Because it’s true. 

This poor yugioh fan who was thrown into this crack mansion of a fandom with no strong familiarity with anime classics or anime tropes, shonen or otherwise, to give her any context, has finally figured out a couple of narrative ground rules derived from contexts more familiar to her:

DM: Built on horror story premises, runs on fairy tale logic.

GX: Built on kids’ fantasy book premises, runs on superhero movie logic.

I’ll have to see about the next three series once I get to them.
