the scene in the hunchback of notre dame where quasi thinks esmeralda is dead kept replaying in my head while drawing that. love this scene in the movie but again, tone is everything. yes i know that's ironic considering this movie has tonal problems but it's a fav okay??

i always fear i'm straying too much from the vibe and tone of the original show with my comics. i don't want my comics to be a saturday morning cartoon, but i don't want it to be a gritty reboot either lol. i just want to see the characters we knew when we were kids dealing with adult problems like we all do now. also, character exploration!!! my favorite thing ever!!! i want to see how much i can explore while staying faithful to the characters as much as possible. beetlejuice is not made for drama so i keep having to strongarm him into it; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. for example the sketch above, that's not it. but i'd like to think that i managed to pull it off with the beetlejuice apology scene i did early on
