guys I'm very high but I learned today that there was a study to determine if praying mantises could see in 3D (they can) and in order to figure this out the scientists made tiny 3d glasses to put on the mantis before showing it a movie of 'prey' moving across the screen. you can read more about it here but pleas look at th e tiny 3d glasses

the bright side of longer evenings is that you often find sleepy insects earlier than you would otherwise, like this Ammophila that had already gone to bed at 5 in the afternoon. these very recognizable sphecids show up around here occasionally but are always busy, making photos difficult. a snoozing one is a lucky find

witness her technique. one neat thing about these is the way they "hug" the stem when sleeping instead of just using their mandibles and keeping the legs held tightly against their body, like nomad and digger bees do for example
