I love bugs I love them they're so small and they have so many cool specialized survival niches a ton of them can fly and even more can just casually climb up walls they are tiny little dudes with their own individual powers and abilities and they control through hydraulics which is so. cool plus they are silly and weird and some of them are downright ridiculous and I love them so very much

also, do you think ralsei is the darkner version of the devil horn headband kris used to wear, and, if so, what do you think this says about the two of them?

i think that's definitely the most likely answer at this point, though it wouldn't really explain why the hell he functions differently than other darkners and can appear outside castle town of his own accord without petrifying. (unless he's similar to kris's knife and somehow exists in their inventory at all times while also being invisible to the player?) It's entirely possible that he's something else, but bare minimum it would explain why he looks so similar to the rest of kris's family and the blatant self-esteem issues he has. It's definitely interesting to think that the all-knowing magic-using tutorial character of this game, the one who guides kris through this unfamiliar world and the only healer in the party for the majority of the first few chapters, is someone born from kris's own insecurity over how out of place they feel in their own family. Assuming ralsei IS kris's headband, then his choice to hide his face during the first chapter, his insistence that he exists purely to help lightners and doesn't "deserve" to have his own wants and feelings, his fear over what will happen if kris and susie learn the full truth of the prophecy, even his encouragement that the player recruit enemies to castle town rather than using violence all take on a slightly different meaning. his insecurity can be inferred to stem from kris's own--he is an object literally representative of the fact that they are the odd one out both in hometown and in their own family. He is a desperate attempt to fit in, to make oneself what is expected. And by extension he is also representative of a deep, painful loneliness that comes with never seeing anyone else that looks like you. His passive nature and the things he keeps from kris and susie are the effect of something built deep into the core of ralsei as an object; the need to conform, to make yourself palatable and to not cause problems for the people you care about. to make people forget that you're the odd one out. to be what you're 'supposed' to be, no matter the cost. And recruiting darkners to castle town is a way to give ralsei people like him to come home to, something that kris never had.

My friend, Angel, commissioned me to pyrogragh this pair of leather gloves that he will be using as a wildfire fighter in Colorado. What sold me on the project was him saying “I just want trees and mountains to be included. Other than that, you’d have total creative freedom, I know you create better that way” :’)

By illustrating skeletal human hands made from sticks and wood with growing leaves in the palms of the gloves, I wanted to create a reminder for Angel that he is very much a part of the nature he is fighting to protect.
