Bob Mizer marked his photographs with a series of coded symbols in order to provide further insight into the personality type of his models (beyond that of which was included in the accompanying vital statistics blub set beside each image) Early issues of Physique Pictorial do not exhibit these symbols, however in later publications he decided to include them.

Eventually, he offered his subscribers the information required in order to decode them:

”As we have long promised, we at last have available a key to the subjective character analysis symbols used on many of the models photos appearing in Physique Pictorial”

 It has been suggested that these codes perhaps represent a darker undertone in respect of Mizers intentions, being linked to an inference that he offered his models to prospective clients as prostitutes, and these symbols were used to find a subject of particular interest. Ultimately however, the true purpose of these codes remains unknown.
