I try to take a moment each day to invest in myself. One of the things I’ve always wanted to do is improve my writing. It isn’t horrible but I desire to have PhD style writing capabilities and one day be a published author. I realize that progress is a step by step process with no short cuts. Do you know what IVF is? In vitro fertilization is a process that can be used to aid families who are suffering from infertility, grow their family. The first known successful IVF was performed in 1978. My husband and I were discussing how when we were growing up, children in our ignorance, attempting to be cruel to others would use the derogatory term “test-tube baby.” We laughed reflecting on our youth because it was so unknown how wide-spread the procedure would be today. According to research, as of 2018, eight million children had been born using IVF. Though I can’t remember ever using this term, I remember it, and I chuckle today because of our history with IVF. Just to note, the egg nor embryo is ever in a test-tube. I believe a Petri dish is used but not that the means of transporting such special cargo is relevant. What is most important is that this process saved our family. Without IVF, our family would not have grown, and I am so humbled and grateful. Two things I want you to take away from this post, one: be careful how you judge new ideas. Historically people judged the automobile, transcontinental air travel, etc. and look where we are now. We must evolve as a people. Try to learn as much as you can about things that are new to you. Secondly, IVF, though it can have an amazing outcome, the process is hard, emotional, and not always successful, even when you have been successful with it before. Take a moment to send good thoughts, not word necessarily, but thoughts and prayers to families challenged by infertility. They, “we” could use your support. As I reflect on this week I want to say there’s so many amazing people on Instagram that I call friends. Thank you all for the birthday wishes and the words of encouragement. I can’t believe I’m 45 but at the same time I’m thankful for all of the years I’ve been given. Got to spend the day with this little one for her annual birthday trip to the dentist. Didn’t know if she’d be brave like last time or hysterical like the time before. I’ll let you know how it ended, she was brave! There was even a situation: Dental assistant (DA): we tried to get the x-rays but sometimes with little kids it’s just hard for them to control their tongue. Hazel-Grey: Oh no you have to let me try again. I can’t quit until I get it. (DA): no no it’s OK we’ll do it next time. No kid begs for X-rays. Hazel-Grey: No I never quit. You must let me try one more time. (DA): Ok if you want this, I’m in! Story ending: 15 minutes later, two X-rays taken, three dental assistants helping her accomplish her goal and an audience of ten cheering and clapping as she celebrated. Back at it again. Editing an audiobook. Total truth moment. ..The thing about editing for me is it makes work on my perfectionism. I love giving a perfect product but then it’s hard knowing I didn’t reach perfection on my first try.
