Among the many social evils that man is capable of there is one that baffles me the most, child sexual abuse. What drives a fully mature man or woman to grab a minor and forcefully engage in sex with them.Is it just senseless fantasies, pervesion or just plain stupidity. Why do we as a society turn a blind eye to such sickening acts. Why do we allow our judiciary to let such “monsters ” walk free among us?Is it because we are too ashamed to accept the fact that there are those amongst us who would easily molest our children?Or is it because we are too comfortable in our make-believe world where nothing matters unless it affects us personally?
I subscribe to the Christian religion and I know that the Lord condemns acts of sexual immorality.Deuteronomy 22:25 states “But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die”This was the law as given by God himself. Why then do we as christians allow these things to happen?
I recently listened to a court case in the USA about a serial rapist who had finally been arrested.According to his lawyer he fell as a child and injured his frontal lobe. “The frontal lobe is the part of the brain that controls important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors. It is, in essence, the “control panel” of our personality and our ability to communicate,”argued his lawyer claiming the accused had no control over his impulses. The judge and jury sentenced the man to three years in a mental hospital after which the doctors would decide whether to release him. But I wonder whether the same lawyer, judge or members of the jury would have reasoned in the same way if it was their daughter who was a victim of the same man.I don't think they would have spared the man if one of their children was a victim. How does a judge sleep well knowing that somewhere a child is cursing them for such blatant injustice? How do you convince a child to believe in humanity when they can see their molesters freely walking the streets. When did we as a society decide to let our innocent kids have their innocence snatched away from them and keep quiet about it. It's time we stopped burying our heads under the sand.Let us not accept sexual abuse of our children as the norm. As parents, brothers, sisters, cousins,uncles.......let us all strive to make Kenya a safe place for our sons and daughters.I love this country and I love its people.Time and time again we have defied the odds and proven ourselves worthy to be called the greatest people on Earth. We believe in unity, love, passion, understanding and justice. All of these ideals and values are written at the core of every Kenyan and now I call on you to prove to the world that we are the best. That we will not be silent when our children cannot walk the streets without fear. That we will rise up in arms to defend the decency, dignity and innocence of our children.
I wish to finish with a phrase known to you all
YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL
