I've made several posts about this on my previous blogs but seeing as I keep deleting them on a whim, I forget to save my headcanon posts. So, I've rewritten this meta on Byasha's name and the different meanings behind them. I'll expand on her given name at birth, including her patronymic and family name. Then give an overview of the different diminutives, and how and when they may be used.

The name given to her at birth was Бьянка Михайловна Старкова (Byanka Mikhailovna Starkova).

Бьянка (Byanka): the name Бьянка (Byanka) is an atypical name in Russia (then the Soviet Union), bearing Italian and Latin roots and being derived from the name Bianca, meaning “white” or “pure.” Its presence in a Russian context is striking, even foreign, especially for someone born in Сталинград (Stalingrad) in 1940. There could be several reasons as to why her parents would name her Byanka, perhaps they wanted to name her something unorthodox in this age, and something that'd be as unique as Byanka herself would turn out to be.

The idea for Byanka's name was that of her mother, Yuliya's, whose family was on the wealthier side of Russian/Soviet history. The Sidorov (her maternal family) family name was long associated with the Romanov's and by extension the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II. Yuliya's infatuation with the name Bianca could be a testament to her upbringing where culture and nobility was valued in her home, and thus the name Byanka was chosen for her first and only daughter.

Михайловна (Mikhailovna): in Russian naming tradition, the patronymic is formed by taking the father's first name and adding -овна (ovna) for daughters, or -ович (ovich) for sons. In Byasha's case, her father was Михаил Ильевич Старков (Mikhail Ilyevich Starkov), and so her patronymic is Михайловна (Mikhailovna), meaning daughter of Mikhail. Patronymics are formal and obligatory in many social situations, and names that particularly schoolteachers would've used to address their students, so would doctors and officers, etc. The name Mikhailovna ties Byanka to her father and his legacy. Mikhail Starkov was a man of principle, a renowned war veteran, but also a ghost that'd forever linger in her blood.

Старкова (Starkova): the surname Старкова comes from the masculine form Старков with the feminine suffix -а. If we look at the family name Старков from an etymological standpoint, it is likely derived from the word старый (old), possibly denoting ancestral status, long lineage, or age-wisdom. It's a weighty and weary name, one can say the name Старкова (Starkova) means daughter of the old world, referencing Soviet ideals, broken and decayed empires, broken fathers and immortal winters. To Westerners it may sound like an elegant last name, but to Russians or people from other Slavic backgrounds, the name might evoke feelings of a strong but wind-worn and rusted legacy, or even a burden.

DIMINUTIVES OF БЬЯНКА (BYANKA). in Russian, a diminutive is a modified form of a name that's used to express a specific emotional hue. Diminutives can be used to express familiarity, affection, endearment and sometimes even condescension. Diminutives are created by adding specific suffixes to the name that alter tone and meaning depending on the context and relationship. It's important to note that diminutives are reserved specifically for people that fit into certain categories. Someone unfamiliar or not close with Byasha should never address her with an affectionate diminutive; she may take that as a slight or as condescending.

Бьяша (Byasha): neutral, short-form. Practical, casual. The closest thing to everyday use. Safe, inoffensive. Could be spoken between equals or used by those who knew her before she was weaponized.

Бьяночка (Byanochka), Бьяничка (Byanichka), Бьяшунья (Byashunya), Бяшенька (Byashenka): endearing, familial, familiar. These diminutives were typically used by family and friends. Can be interpreted or received as mocking or condescending if said by the wrong person. These forms carry warmth. A softness few were allowed to show her. Rare but sacred.

Бьянушка (Byanushka), Бьянуша (Byanusha): affectionate and kind of archaic (Byanushka). The suffix -ушка (ushka) is old-fashioned and used to express tenderness and love. Byanushka particularly are only used by lovers, significant others OR one's old grandmother (oddly enough). For example, in a default setting, only Magnus is permitted to address her as Byanushka.

Бьяшка (Byashka): blunt, cold, pejorative. Often said with a sneer, meant as a spite, as offence and to mock. Rivals, opponents, anyone that may have been jealous or afraid of her, with the intention to belittle her, could address her as Byashka and she would see red.

Ultimately, we can boil down the meanings and significance of each of her names to:

Byanka, from Bianca, means white ⎯ a deliberate irony to the weapon she became, the personification of death, blood and shadow. Mikhailovna marks her origin ⎯ the connection to her family and her father, a father who sacrificed his humanity to the war. Starkova binds her to a legacy ⎯ an old lineage, legacy of strength and endurance, even ruin.
