Rick felt the air go out of him.

Viv had always been cynical, but somehow her comment about love threw him off guard. There was something about the way she had said it: so casual as though it was just a known fact. Like she was just waiting for Adam to fuck her over (or for her to do the same to him). And he realized, suddenly, that that was how all of her relationships had ended. And his heart hurt for her.

There was a million different things he could have said, but in the end he just gave her an impish smile. “Maybe you should stop dating jerks,” He teased.

She laughed, “They’re kind of my type, or haven’t you noticed?” She exhaled, taking another sip of her beer. “Adam really is an ass, isn’t he? But then, you know, so am I.”

“This is true.”

“Shut up.”  She replied, rolling her eyes.

He’d wanted to tell her that she deserved so much better than that guy. But she was drunk and he was high and his brain was too muddled to say something like that without also saying something he didn’t mean to say.

5 YEARS AGO.

“Hey, you know you can stay, right? You can always stay.”

He didn’t mean just for the night. He meant forever.

He’d told her this before and he’d say it again. He’d never stop offering. It wasn’t that he had much to offer (far from it — he and his mom lived together in a small trailer home where no one had any privacy). But he knew where she was living, too, and he knew how she was treated there.

Rick didn’t hate many people. True, he didn’t like the way a lot of them looked at him — like he was something that had crawled out from under a rock and should just go back from where he came from. But most of the time, he let it roll off his back. He let them think what they wanted. He’d let them underestimate him. It didn’t matter. 

But he did hate her aunt and uncle. He hated how they looked at Vivian and only saw failure and embarrassment and something broken that needed to be fixed. He’d be the first to admit that she was rough around the edges, but those imperfections was something he loved most about her.

Every time he offered her a permanent haven from her life, he knew that she wouldn’t take it. She’d stick it out, living there, because of Natalie. She loved her sister more than anything. Even though Natalie was treated like a princess, she’d never leave her there alone. But he wouldn’t ever stop trying. He wouldn’t ever let her feel like living here wouldn’t be an option. 

“Yeah, I know.” She was putting on her jacket, grabbing her keys, “But I gotta go. It’s already past my curfew.” She added, rolling her eyes. “I’ve only got two more years of this shit. I can take it.”

He gave her a soft smile. He knew she could. She could take anything life through at her.

PIPPA I AM SO DOWN FOR ALL OF THIS!!!! rick is so chill/friendly and he def goes out of his way to welcome new people and tbh he’d be all about welcoming minh and settling her in and helping her adjust to a different culture + I feel like he’d be really interested to hear all about her home and what life is like in vietnam, etc. etc. I think that rick really likes traveling and has def like backpacked through the us before but he’s never been out of the country or something.

oKAY wow so rick does not like adam at!!! all!!!! I feel like, for the most part, rick is a really good judge of character and he can tell if you are basically a good person or whatever, but I think that his judgement is pretty clouded when it comes to adam haha (s/o to viv! rick being lowkey jealous over here ;DD), pLUS I think that he only ever sees adam when he’s hanging w/ viv (aka when he’s at his worst) and between the two, he just thinks adam’s the worst and waiting until he and viv break up, lol. 

also, I feel like he tries to be ~civil~ b/c of viv but he’s not gonna pretend to like adam when he doesn’t. But I feel like they’ve been friends for a long time now??? Maybe since they were kids??? I really feel like her aunt and uncle did NOT approve of her having Rick for a friend (but you know that didn’t stop them) and Rick would always have her over/let her escape her home life wheNEVER she wanted (and when things were really bad he’d def do things like ~egg her aunt’s car~ (s/o to that edit I made 2034823948 years ago in a galaxy far, far away). Anyway, I feel like he’s slowly grown to feel more for her over the years and tbh idk that he even realized that it was happening until one day he just knew?? (probs when she started seeing the jock and he’s like wAIT!!!!!) Anyway, I feel like Rick is usually very open about how he’s feeling and if he had liked her when she was single, he would have told her, but since she isn’t single he’s gonna keep it to himself -- also he just sees her relationship w/ adam as a trainwreck waiting to happen tbh. Especially if they’ve known each other since they were kids, I feel like he might actually realize that she cares for Adam more than he does/more than she lets on?? I mean, he knows that Viv is tough and that she’ll be okay if her heart is broken/take care of herself but Rick doesn’t want her to have to go through that tbh. he really does enjoy it though and he’s made some cool pieces

he’s a little stubborn though and he’s not really ready to admit that college has been helpful to him.

he might like to get stoned on the weekends, but he’s a pretty decent guy

he’s also pretty helpful/handy

his mom never had a lot of money even after working three jobs to support him, so he’s kinda crafty at fixing things.
