james fitzjames is truly such a blorbo. he spent his whole life failing to be something he wanted to be and put so much effort into because no matter how many heroic acts he committed (or war crimes that got him status) he cannot change the fundamental act of his birth. like. every single does is completely fucking pointless. no matter how much heroism and status and no matter how many people love him he is still illegitimate. he has a loving family! but he's still illegitimate. he puts so much effort into something completely impossible. his only freedom is in finally telling francis. his only freedom is in accepting the thing he tried so hard to escape! because it is inescapable!

you watch a car commercial and the car is presented as a masculinity carapace and this idea persists as if we don’t all know that the car is actually a second womb and every arrival + subsequent exit from the vehicle is a rebirth — it’s obvious why straight men feel such an attachment, and doubly obvious why they don’t want you to know. the trained eye can locate the mother wound of every car driver within seconds.

remember when you’re writing a gross and terrible power dynamic that you should be asking yourself constantly how you could make it worse and sexier
