If I were Alice Cullen, I’d 100% have a little side hustle in the girls’ bathroom reading palms and giving chaotic predictions just for shit and gigs. I mean, they’ve gotta make going to school for the hundredth time at least somehow fun.

I think what really drew me in to twilight when I was a teenager is that, despite the epic vampire whirlwind romance, the teenagers actually do feel like they have REAL lives, and it’s a real shame that that doesn’t translate to the movies (bc a movie with pointless scenes of the main character making enchiladas & doing homework would be crazy boring). I like that Edward enjoys skipping class to sit in his car & listen to Linkin Park CDs, I like that Bella spends her weekends doing laundry and drafting her Macbeth essay, and on sunny days she lays out a blanket to read in her backyard. I like that she drives to her best friend’s house after school to watch him fix cars and do homework together, I like that they have joint family dinners that are just eating spaghetti on fold-out chairs on the deck. I like that her friend group piles in mike’s mom’s van to go hang out at the beach, and when she brings a camera to school they all start a “picture war.” I like that she has a part-time retail job and sits at the kitchen table filling out uni applications with her boyfriend. It definitely loses that quality around eclipse when the focus has to stay on the actual plot, but I like that twilight & new moon feel pretty grounded in what introverted lower-middle class small-town teenagers are actually doing.

“They should’ve talked about Bella’s hallucinations more after New Moon” not in a “it’s problematic and objectively bad storytelling to drop it” way, but in a “Edward’s pain and disbelief that Bella risked her life just to hear his voice was delicious, and I crave more” way

Twilight will forever be my favorite case of gender contamination. (Diet Coke is a close second, the Beatles is third)

There are, of course, plenty of valid criticisms to be made of Twilight, but those weren’t the basis of the enormous backlash back in the day. That was more “How dare someone (some housewife!) make vampires girly? How dare someone take a classic horror movie monster and put it in a story that appeals specifically to young women, a narrative that hits the tropes and beats that make them a little feral? Gets them excited? How can we let girls have an indulgent power fantasy? Those are for men!!!”

And of course there’s the straight misogyny disguised as concern (a tale much older than romance novels, but has consistently plagued romance novels since their advent; the ContraPoints Twilight video has a great bit on this): “The girls are swooning over a stalker! A monster! Think of the children, they’re being corrupted!! They think it’s okay for vampires sparkle! There’s an age gap in the vampire-human romance!!”

Whether Twilight was a “good” love story was never relevant. And you know what? It is a good story. It’s certainly one of my favorites. Twilight simply has the misfortune to appeal to an audience that isn’t allowed to be vocal when they like things.

In summary:
