bringing this back bc someone liked it recently and i saw across the spiderverse four times in theaters, preordered the artbook and bf bought us the movie when it came out on dvd

somehow they managed to surpass the original which i didn't think was possible and was skeptical about bc sequels are never as good but holy fuck man that was gorgeous and every time we watched it, i cried and not for plot reasons

anyway it's been like four or five years and i never did manage to get to art school or learn animation or do anything with my life really other than fall down a deep dark hole but somewhere around being introduced to gwen's universe, the little dreamer in me came back to life a little so. that's good media

i’ve got a wholeass rant about why into the spiderverse is exactly what animation is meant to be so buckle up folks

OKAY so today i was about to launch into why into the spiderverse is so incredible but my boss shut me down with “psh i’m not gonna pay to see a cartoon” and i got annoyed but also too anxious to say anything so y'all get to hear what i would’ve told him if my ass hadn’t been too chicken shit

animation has this bullshit idea attached to it that it’s only for kids shows or really weird and generally vulgar adult shows, but that’s because that’s all it’s been used for so far. and yeah! that stuff is great and all but the mistake we’ve all been making is that we’re either trying to fit it within the boundaries of real life physics OR we’re trying to break real life physics in increasingly disturbing ways. into the spiderverse is so amazing because it breaks our real life boundaries AND is aesthetically pleasing!! it pushes our boundaries in ways i’ve never seen before! this proves that we could make so many stunning movies with animation!! that’s what it’s meant for!!! there’s so much unexplored potential here!! into the spiderverse is just as good, if not BETTER than a lot of the live action superhero movies that have been released so far and that’s because of its medium! throughout the movie, there’s so many smooth switches between regular animation and a kind of comic book look that just wouldn’t be achievable if it had been live action. it would’ve been clunky. just. the lighting, the colors, the camera angles, the effects, the frame rate, just. everything. absolutely breathtaking. the creators used their medium so well, i just. hhh.

and yeah, a live action into the spiderverse still would have been good bc of the story and the writing but just. i don’t think it would have had the same effect on me. i would’ve walked away thinking “yeah that was a really good movie” but i very much doubt i would’ve said “guess who’s about to go on a fan art streak for this” fifteen minutes in. this is the movie that made me absolutely sure i want to be an animator. that i want to be a part of something that leaves people as awestruck and excited as this movie left me

maybe it’s not that way for everyone, but damn, i just really love into the spiderverse and i hate that some people won’t even give it a shot bc it’s animated

Do you guys remember how kidnap fantasies were popular on wattpad because young girls and queer teens were both made to feel shame at the thought of their own sexualities, so the fantasy of being kidnapped totally against their will was a way for them to engage with a romantic or sexual fantasy without feeling morally in the wrong for doing so? Added bonus that the fantasy involved being whisked away from repressive environments like home or school, right?

Finding out that Bram Stoker was in a sexless marriage and that scholars believe that he very likely was closeted gay puts the entire book into perspective as to WHY it reads EXACTLY like a self insert wattpad Dracula kidnap fic:

"I TOTALLY love my wife and would never do anything that an upstanding Good Straight Working Man wouldn't do but oh nooo, big strong man with broad back and strong enough arms to carry me back to bed like a princess trapped me and claimed me as his, completely against my will 👉👈 But he protects me against the bad evil sexual women (who I assure you, I am TOTALLY sexually attracted to, as any straight man with a choice would be) but trust me, I do NOT want ANY of this. not submission. I really hate the "My OC, my rules" thing. Cause like, no? Just because they are your oc doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them. If you want to make your oc suffer and not like them get help, you deserve to lose rights over them. Especially if you only do that stuff to purposely trigger people. Once you do that, your oc no longer belongs to you. they belong to the public who will take better care of them instead

Gnc nonbinary culture is asking your friends to use he/him pronouns for you more often, and then when they do start to use those pronouns for you it also feels weird and so now you're starting to wonder if maybe you just want to confuse everyone with your gender. It doesn't matter what my gender is, as long as nobody can agree on what they think it is

i felt like this as well when i started using he/him pronouns. i will say it sounds weird for a bit at first because youre not used to hearing it (or they don’t fit both are fine!!)
