Its an anime based off a popular romantic-comedy/coming-of-age manga of the same name centered around the second arcade boom in Japan during the early 90s thanks to Capcom's "Street Fighter II: The World Warriors" (SF2). After getting his ass beat by the gifted but socially arkward and sheltered high class rich girl Akira in 30 matches in SF2, (former) arcade champ Haruo forms both a rivalry AND friendship with Akira; developing a competitive drive against her and eventually, romantic feelings -- all thanks due to their mutual love of fighting games. Hi-Score Girl is a beautiful trip of 90s gaming nostalgia featuring hit arcade games of the era such as Street Fighter II, Golden Axe, Fatal Fury, The Kung Fu and many more.
