I think what really gets me about mgs2 is it does the whole deconstruction of the first game. It tells you directly that this is all a setup, that you like Raiden have fallen into this false reality, asks how far you will go into the brutal war game, tells you to stop and turn off the console, accurate predicts the internets role in censorship and the rise of fascism in the USA, tricks you into fulfilling the pre-selected path you though you had already defeated. Yet it never belittles the player for our actions. Instead snake turns to Raiden and the player to tell us that this isn’t over, we have to find our own identity’s outside of this. We have too, not just for ourselves but for everyone we love and ever will love. We can’t let this experience define what we believe in and fight for. we are the only ones who can decide that. It could have so easily been a doomerism “we are all fucked and it your fault and your stupid for ever caring about our game” but its not. It grabs your hand and tells you it’s not your fault and we have to keep fighting. I don’t know it fucks me up

Welcome to the new year
Old photos on the wall. Old emotions
Stained glass pain close to shattering
And so it did
And how I'm no longer bound to you
My love dimmed, but did not blow out
It's where you can no longer see
Where I know you will never seek it out
Or seek me
Shame
But the page turns anyway and the bandaids rip off my skin
I'll remember it well but can't ever go back...
