I am collecting some teaching materials to make the English lessons more various and exciting.

ICE-BRAKERS
A great wind blows
How to play:
Arrange the chairs in a circle, facing the middle. All the children sit down.
An adult stands outside the circle and calls out "A great wind blows for everyone who....", fills in the blank with a statement that will affect some of the group (see ideas below). Anyone who is affected must stand up and find another chair which is at least 2 chairs away from their own.
If a large group of children stand up, the adult should quickly remove one of the chairs from the circle as soon as the kids stand up and begin moving. Any child who cannot find a chair moves outside the circle and helps the adult come up with ideas for the next "great wind blows".
Here are some ideas:
A great wind blows for everyone who has a little brother
A great wind blows for everyone who has a big sister
A great wind blows for everyone who has been to France
A great wind blows for everyone who has a dog
A great wind blows for everyone who ate cornflakes for breakfast this morning
A great wind blows for everyone who likes (celebrity)
Find your partner
o Great for pairing up children at the beginning of a party, and for breaking the ice when kids don't know each other well as everyone has an excuse to approach other people and start talking.
You will need:
Pieces of paper onto which you have written well-known partners
Safety pins
Write up your pieces of paper well in advance, choosing well known partners that will be recognised by the children. For example:
Micky Mouse and Minnie Mouse
Batman and Robin
Anthony and Cleopatra
Torville and Dean
Mary Kate and Ashleigh
Prince Charles and Princess Diana
Charlie Brown and Snoopy
When the kids have arrived, pin a name to their backs. At your signal, the children mingle with the other guests, asking questions about themselves which can only be answered by a "yes" or a "no".
"Am I alive?"
"Am I a film star?"
"Am I male?"
While trying to guess who they are, they should also be looking out for their possible partner. Younger kids may need an adult to give the odd clue or two along the way!
My favourite things
You will need:
A piece of paper divided into four sections for each child (or print out a copy of our template, below, for each child)
Colouring pens and pencils
Instructions:
Ask the children to draw, one in each section, their favourite toy, food, person and animal. When they have finished, sit the children in a circle with all the pictures in the centre. Can they guess whose is whose?
Wipe that smile off his your face
o Sit round in a circle. Youngest starts. He smiles his widest, silliest smile at everyone round the circle, trying to make someone else giggle or laugh. He gets a point for everyone who can't keep a totally straight face. After a while, he uses one hand to literally "wipe" the smile off his face, and hand it to the person next to him, and on it goes.
o When the kids are little this game can cause much merriment, especially if you are playing with mixed ages. Not many little children can keep a straight face when their Granny or Grandpa is grinning madly at them!
Who am I
You Will Need:
A recording device. In an area where they can not be overheard, each child records a sentence describing him or herself, for example: I am five years old, have blond hair and am wearing black shoes. Who am I? When the tape is played back the children must then try to guess who is speaking.
Two truths and a Lie
Where do you stand?
How to play:
Draw a line with chalk or otherwise mark out a line down the centre of your space. All the children start by standing on the line.
Now call out opposites and point in one direction for each. Children make their choice and run to the correct side of the line.
Examples might be:
Cats or dogs?
Rabbits or mice?
Blue or pink?
Football or rugby?
Country or town?
Hot dogs or hamburgers?
Cereal or toast?
Maths or English?
Tinkerbell or Peter Pan?
Try to think up some opposites that will get all the children on one side of the line!
If you are playing indoors and you want the kids to get a little more exercise, you can also ask children to sit down once they have decided.
Why not let some older children run the game, and give them a clipboard to predict and then record how many children choose each side?
The blanket game
The name Game
The Line up Game
o How to play:
Separate everyone into teams. 5 or 6 per team is the ideal number, and if you have mixed ages, mix them up!
One person is the caller. He calls out "Everyone please now line up ..." and fills in the blank with a statement such as the suggestions below. All the players race to find the right order and shout when they are finished.
o Ideas:
o Everyone please now line up in order of age, oldest at the front, youngest at the back
Everyone please now line up in first name alphabet order
Everyone please now line up by height, shortest first
Everyone please now line up according to your birthdays - first in the year goes first
Everyone please now line up according to who served themselves dinner first
How many cousins have you got? Line up with the least cousins in front
What colour is your top? Line up in alphabetical order with the earliest letter first
Most hair at the back, least hair at the front
etc
o Variations:
o Make the odd round - or the whole game - a silent one! Players can only communicate with gestures!
Tell me something
o How to play:
o Sit in a circle and choose one child to start. She tells the group a little about herself. The next child to her left then picks an aspect of what she has told and adds her own snippet of information. What she says must be slightly different, but linked. Sometimes the adult might like to intervene with a quick prompt to help a shyer child. The examples below make it clear.
o Correct:
o Child 1: I often go to stay with my grandparents at the weekend.
o Child 2: My grandmother lives in Australia so I don't see her very often.
o Child 3: My family went on holiday to Australia last year and it was amazing.
o Child 4: My favourite animals at the zoo are the wallabies.
o Child 5: Is a wallaby the same as a kangaroo? I used to have a kangaroo cuddly toy called Wally.
o Child 6: I like animals.
o Teacher: I like animals too. If you had to pick only one animal to be your favourite, which one would you pick?
o and so on...
