Since we're talking the Stargirl show...

I understand that the younger cutie patootie version of Beth Chapel is widely beloved by the show's fans, but as someone who's perused many Beth comics I've come to realize just how much the writers had to strip away from Beth to make her fit into the high school setting.

Comic Beth is a talented doctor, occasionally sarcastic, she's very career focused, but also has a playful side that can pop up. Her little arc of feeling lost in life after losing her vision is actually very well-written (IMO) and her finding confidence again after realizing that she can see in the dark is a good little character moment for her.

Aside from the obvious ableism of making Beth sighted in the show, I just feel like the character depth of comic!Beth was also tossed out the window so Johns could make her Maxine 2.0 (sans the character moments that make Maxine interesting, but that's another topic).

they didn't even include Maxine's trait of being super queer coded, what a waste

They even uprooted comic!Beth's family life in the show. In the comics her dad is a Reverend, her mother sings in the church choir, and she has four brothers who apparently taught her how to fight. I guess the show writers saw this backstory and realized it would clash with what they had planned, so they tossed it out the window as well.

I just... I really like comic!Beth, okay? I miss her. I love her. I want her to do more things in the JSA ongoing.

@DC plz let me write a Mid-Nite series where she and Pieter meet and become a comedic duo. It's all I want.

really good part of stargirl season two is when pat's like "hey charles i don't know that my band of superpowered kids is ready to face an immortal agent of god's wrath" and dr. mcnider goes "well maybe your kids aren't but my new best friend is the greatest and most special sixteen year old girl in the world and i think she can do anything." and like. he was right. beth can do anything

“Beth!” He stepped forward to greet her, but was careful to stay close to the walls so that they wouldn’t obstruct the already-too-busy ER or delay anyone from getting the medical attention they needed.

He needed attention, but not that kind of attention.

“I’ve been looking for you all day.”

Her eyes widened, jumping straight to the worst conclusion. Clearly, he was not reassuring enough. “Did something happen? Are you hurt? Do you need help–”

“No no no,” he scrambled to relief her. “Nothing happened. I just wanted to see you.”

Her expression shifted from confusion to surprise, then as his words sank in, a shyness took over her face.

“Oh.”

Rick’s eyes darted to the gravel floor as he felt a heat rush up his neck.
