Hi! I was wondering if you have any helpful tips from your experience with dry starting a tank? Not new to aquariums but this is my 1st using the DSM on anything and want to make sure I do it right! :) I just set it up yesterday, I'm working with a 15g dirt tank, currently planted with just Lobelia Cardinalis, although I'm looking to possibly switch to or add HC (struggling to find any local). I have the tank covered and the substrate soaked, and plan to mist once or twice a day as well. Thanks!
Sorry I hardly use this blog anymore and missed this. My biggest tip is don't get impatient. Wait until you have significant root growth and the plants have grown in nicely before flooding the tank, and go slowly starting with an inch of water for a few days before increasing the depth slowly to your desired level. Also, watch out for mould/mildew as in humid environments you're likely to see some. Just gently remove it with tweezers if you see any. Hope this helps.

Thank god for quarantine!
One of the new boys I have jarred, a nice little dumbo import, is showing signs of fungus. That could have been a disaster if introduced into my system. The other bettas I received at the same time from the same source are so far symptom free but I'm being highly observant so I can treat if the need be. But seriously I cannot over emphasise the importance of quarantining any new fish you bring into your home.

Three years ago, my dog went viral on Imgur and Reddit, thanks to this picture I took right after she’d yanked down a post from the front of our house with her bare strength.
But like the image above says, this is not a good post.
That dog above, the one that made so many people laugh, her name is Eva, and she’s my 7-year-old lab. She was just diagnosed with canine lymphoma.

Without chemo, she only has 3 months left with us. But her oncologist has given her a good prognosis with chemotherapy. She could live to see her 9th, 10th, and even 11th birthday.
Which means more years of this happy, ridiculous puppy.
The price to extend her life? $8500.
I nearly died when I saw the number. I’m paying off 4 student loans right now, and my parents are in insurmountable debt. I thought, this is it, we’re screwed. In between crying spells and anxiety attacks, I realized what my choices were: give up and let Eva go in the next 3 months, or crowdfund my ass off.

Internet: you’ve done it before, now I’m begging you, do it again. Spread Eva like wildfire. She deserves a second chance. She deserves the extra time, and all the fun and happiness she’ll have in that time.
Here is the link to her gofundme.
Any amount you can donate will help tremendously. Please, help Eva.

Quartz is usually fine c:

IMPORTANT PSA TO PEOPLE WITH FISH WHO ALSO LIKE STONES AND STUFF:
There are certain stones you simply CANNOT put into your tank. They will leech or dissolve into the water, putting your fish at risk. With the whole boho crystal trend ATM fish lovers obviously want their tanks to match their summer lovin gypsy festival lifestyle but guys pls put your fish first.
Fluorite is pretty but it will BREAK DOWN IN YOUR TANK, harming your fish. I literally just made that mistake and thank goodness I checked online.
Here’s some stones that CAN go in your tank: Quartz Rose Quartz Aventurine Jasper Agate Granite Jade Petrified wood Onyx Slate River stones Carnelian Tigers eye Bloodstone
Here’s some that CANNOT: Marble Limestone Pyrite Fossils Amethyst geode (contains heavy metals) Coal Dolomite Selenite Alabastar Satin spar Gypsum Calcite
Remember, if in doubt do the vinegar test! If your piece of rock bubbles up, it ain’t safe for your fish.
