Yes, it’s covered in fleas. Yes, it gave birth to four kittens on Nacho’s couch. Yes, Nacho loves all of them.

“Walter wants to kill Fring.”

Mike said it almost casually as Nacho drove them to the chicken farm. Nacho glanced over at him, and he looked even grumpier than usual. 

“Yeah,” Nacho said. “It’s what I would do if I was in his position. But he’s gotta know it’s a stupid idea.”

“He asked me to help him.”

Nacho was speechless for a moment. Okay, maybe Walter wasn’t as smart as he thought. “What’d you tell him?” 

“I told him he got the job and he needed to learn to take ‘yes’ for an answer. Then I hit him a few times, just to make sure it sunk in. He’s not gonna get anywhere with it, the guy can’t shake a tail to save his life. Literally.” Mike looked over at him. “I’m telling you this ’cause I don’t want you to be tempted.”

Oh, Nacho was tempted. But he was tempted to kill Fring every time he was within a hundred feet of the man. “I’m not that stupid,” he said.

Jesse would never forgive him for this, Nacho thought. He was standing behind Mike, next to Victor, looking at Walter as he tried to talk his way out of dying.

“Please don’t do this,” Walter said. “Mike. You don’t have to do this.”

Mike sighed. “Yeah, unfortunately I do, Walter.”

Nacho had seen this happen a hundred times. He’d tried to think of how it could be avoided, but there was nothing. As far as Fring was concerned, Jesse wasn’t a threat. It had been Walter who had actually killed the two dealers. If he hadn’t intervened, Jesse would be dead.

He found himself tuning Walter out as his pleas got more frantic. It was hard to remember if it was Tuco he was standing behind, or Don Héctor, or Lalo. After so many, they all started to blend together.

Nacho slammed back to reality as Walter said, “I’ll give you Jesse Pinkman.”
