I think what white people (and westerners by extension) need to grasp is that what’s empowering for you is not always empowering for everyone. And what’s restrictive and oppressive for you is not always restrictive and oppressive for everyone. Things such as cultural rules, religion, and family structures are treasured values that are so incredibly beautiful and meaningful to millions of communities and people groups around the world. Things like hyperindividualism are not always empowering or freeing narratives. And embracing the traditions and beliefs of our cultures and relying on the community found within families does not mean we are adhering to a toxic systemic structure. Like you do realize that white people and westerners took all those things like rules, religion and family structure and elevated it into those dominating oppressive systemic structures, right? Right??
