"Master your time like a boss. Here’s Bro. Benjamin Franklin’s 24" IG and 13 virtues. The Thirteen Virtues of Benjamin Franklin: 1. Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation. 2. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation. 3. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time. 4. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve. 5. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing. 6. Lose no time; be always employ’d in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions. 7. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly. 8. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty. 9. Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve. 10. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation. 11. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable. 12. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another’s peace or reputation. 13. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.”

Someday after enough DNA tests, they will discover the gene in doctors making you walking hearts, perennial consciences, and empathetic human beings. And when they do, they will look for this gene in all humanity, and we will have found the answer to wars and to peace and to love. Love means reaching towards neighbors and the world with the same care, regard, generosity and empathy we normally reserve for ourselves and those closest to us. This is the gene that a doctor has inherited. You will not have to wait for your reward in heaven. Every day when you see the smiles of the sick, the poor, the look of hope and momentary happiness of that particular unfortunate that you’ve been able to help, that is heaven by itself. That is the magnificent gene that you possess.
Sam Miller, emeritus trustee at Cleveland Clinic, in a speech given at the clinic’s 2012 Professional Excellence Awards.

My classmates and I thought we were applauding the gift of an organ and the training of a friend. Instead, we had celebrated a seizure that ended a life and the dissection of a woman we did not know. It’s eerie to think about that morning, the strangeness of medical students cheering the news of someone’s death. Yet these contradictions happen all the time in our education. Our lecturers say, “This is a great case,” when describing a toddler who died from a rare cancer. Or, “Look at this beautiful pathology,” when holding up the clogged heart of someone’s father. I wonder if other professions share these kinds of perverse excitements. Do human resources trainees hear of “great” instances of sexual harassment? Do law students study “beautiful” murder cases? In medicine, a lot of our training depends on the misfortune of others. Without sick people, we cannot learn to diagnose and treat. But we sometimes forget to manage our enthusiasm for the science of disease and, in doing so, ignore the human suffering that comes with the experience of disease.
Beautiful Pathologies, Nathaniel Morris (via carolinefryar)

Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we’ll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.
