i'm sorry but the kids today won't understand the little furrowed-brow moments that were the camera zooming in to Asami as Korra was dying from poison

the jump as it cut to Asami's lips holding a pin to put in Korra's hair

the head-shake and throat-catch as Asami's hand closed around Korra's with a pledge of being there for her

that was how we left it for months

and then we came back and Korra was writing letters to Asami

Asami complimented Korra's hair

Korra said "you're so sweet"

you don't

I'm just...I'm serious about that

if you weren't there you don't know what that's like and you can never know what that's like because we KNEW but also we were witnessing an unknowable phenomenon because it was unprecedented you just

and this isn't even getting into their subtle interactions before, the generic interactions, the Basic Stuff, that was just "oh hahahaha wouldn't it be funny" "OH LOOK THEY'RE STANDING NEXT TO EACH OTHER THAT MEANS THEY'RE GOING TO MARRY EACH OTHR" you don't understand that this was ALL EVERYONE EVER HAD this was all that people were used to you don't know you don't Get It it was That it is was Just That it was Just Sparring it was Just a Rescue it was..I'm sorry I'm actually crying right now, this is actually emotional, because it was a thing.

so no I will get upset when people say it Wasn't Enough or it deserved better because no you don't understand everything deserved better but this was how so many others got what they deserved

So I have a lot of thoughts about Wu and team Avatar. The show kind of sets him up to have poor relationships with each of them, but they have to work together (Ruins of Empire), and he and Mako are so clearly in love. And I just think about the development of Wu’s relationships with team avatar like all the time. I think Opal would warm up to him first, then Korra, then Asami, and then Bolin.

But I was thinking about how Asami and Wu would bond, because that seemed the least obvious to me, and I now have this headcanon that it’s over a game of Pai Sho.

So in S3 E9 “The Stakeout,” Asami and Bolin play Pai Sho, and they have different philosophies behind the game. For Bolin, it’s a fast-paced, game of chance. For Asami, it’s the slow, methodical game that Iroh played in ATLA. And this seems to be showing the differences between Mako/Bolin and Asami. Because of their differences in class, they grew up in very different Republic Cities and have very different cultural backgrounds and experiences. And Bolin and Asami play a lot of games, and Bolin only “wins” once (Pabu knocks over the board).

And I just love the idea of Asami and Wu being in a situation where they can play Pai Sho. Because Wu would know how to play the slow, methodical, and aristocratic way. And he’s smart and analytical and able to look at situations big picture (in Ruins of Empire he’s really the only one considering the broader political implications besides Zhu Li). So I just love the idea of Asami being forced to reconsider her judgements about Wu, the silly, irresponsible, spoiled prince, during a five (or some other unreasonable number of) hour game of Pai Sho in which she ultimately falls into his trap and loses. And they aren’t besties by the end, but Asami finally has true respect for Wu beyond “well he’s the least evil leader for the Earth Kingdom.”

And then once that initial ice is broken and mutual respect is forged, Asami comes to appreciate having someone in her life who understands the world that she comes from. Someone who comes from a similar cultural background and experiences. And then she and Wu ultimately forge a true friendship over their shared experiences of wealth and growing up in that environment and being overlooked by others.

I love telling my girlfriend about shows, movies, games, books i am passionate about. I am very happy she can stand all my rambling. And very happy she sees wuko for real. STILL LIKE YEAH the panel where wu says he loves mako is insane! And no one bats an eye! Like even my mom noticed the possibility of wuko when she read the comics and was sad it didn’t happen 😭😭 seeing that everyone I know who read the comics sees this i take that as truth of wuko.

Haha your husband not remembering names is very funny, but very nice to hear he is supportive of your great taste in ships. I will say, simply ‘the fire guy’ is a really funny nickname for mako and I will be using this.

Pamphlets and powerpoints are a great idea tbh. I definitely have read some big ones about various shows and ships, like a few byler powerpoints are like 300 slides 😭😭. I might take inspiration from that and make a long wuko one someday. (Probably in the summer when I am done with my thesis haha, it’s a lot)

YOUR IDEA FOR THE NEW SERIES IS SO GOOD HAHA i would love if that happened for real. I really hope they put like a small easter egg for us wuko fans out there fr. And if they do mention mako or wu got some other love interest, I will be ignoring that and making another version of the story in my head 😭😭. But I wouldn’t put a hint of it past them. It seems to me they were quite upset they didn’t get to make korrasami as clearly queer, and in the comics they definitely were happy to hype up the gayness. I can see them doing more with it in the next show that is for sure :D and happily making more characters canonically queer.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know I love seeing you in the wuko tag. Even though I only see a few people posting wuko content I love this little corner of the internet for real. Recently I have convinced my girlfriend there is definitely something something between mako and wu and she really thinks they might hint at it in the new series or some comic (some mention like ‘oh wu and mako lived here together! for their whole lives!’) I definitely am as delulu and always hold out hope for some confirmation or just hint haha, I still feel like what they did in ruins of the empire was crazy.

I'm so happy you have shown your girlfriend the truth!! I can't stop thinking about "Mako you know I love you" WHAAAAAAAA. Wu loves Mako???? Mako KNOWS that Wu loves him??? He said this in a room with other people and no one reacted??? This is CANON??? WHAT?

I think it's lovely that you convinced your girlfriend that they are clearly meant to be. I myself have a husband who, bless him, is affectionately supportive of my shipping insanity, but does not share my excitement about it at all... A couple of years ago, he said these words to me: "Who do you ship with the fire guy again?" THE FIRE GUY. Another time he referred to Mako as "Bolin's brother, what was his name again?" 😭 I'm fighting for my life over here just to get him to remember their names!! And he loves both ATLA and LOK! He's watched them, he's a player in my TTRPG, he just can't remember anyone's names lmao. But I digress. We can slowly convert the world, one person at a time. Maybe I should make pamphlets. Or one of those low quality PowerPoint presentations.

Oh my god with the new series, let me tell you what I think would be peak comedy. If they just once casually mentioned very subtly Mako and Wu getting married and Mako becoming the King-Consort before the world gets destroyed or whatever. And never mention it again. Like the new Avatar is in Wan Shi Tong's library looking at a book with the earth monarch lineage family tree and there's royal portraits of Mako and Wu as the last Earth kings or whatever and no one even says anything about it and they only show the page of the book for a few frames before they move on 🤣
