This school year has been one of most challenging years I’ve ever had teaching. I’ve had to question whether I should continue in this profession or move on. I have amazing students but it’s been difficult to celebrate those qualities as often as I’d like. Out of nowhere, 1 of my students hada me a gift bag and I can see the stuff monkey on top. We are headed out for lunch so I say I’ll open it later. They make sure to tell me there are snacks on the bottom. The day passes and I didn’t get a chance to open the bag. As we walk out to go home, they remind me again that there are snacks in there. When I get back to class, I grab the bag thinking it’s a belated Christmas gift. After I take my fuzzy monkey out of the bag, there are 2 hand drawn cards that you see with the Nerds candies in there as well. I open the 1st card and the not is apologizing to me for how the class has been making me feel and asking me to not quit. The next card is more of the same but with uplifting quotes (I love quotes) about perseverance. To say I’m choked up would be an understatement. It’ll be 4 years 1/10/23. I may not be crushing this business but I do make way more than I spend having it and I’ve grown immensely as a person as a result of having said yes to the opportunity. Ok, last Friday, I posted a video about completing 3 years without alcohol. Last night in Ft Lauderdale at the culmination of the ACN Elevate national event, I took this picture with Mr. @efraintejadasvp. In March of 2019, I was at my 1st ACN national event. After the 1st day’s training, he came and gave a leadership training to a small group of us. His topic… was integrity, not how we show up for others but ourselves, personal integrity, and keeping the promises we make to ourselves. While it was about seeing our business through to the end and doing what we say we are going to do in it, he planted a seed in me that day. I knew how many times I had committed to losing weight, abstaining from drinking, etc, and never seeing it through. I didn’t take action then, but 6 months later, Mr. Tejada came to Sherman Oaks to do a leadership training. Again, it was about personal integrity, watering that seed and weeding out the ground. 1 month later that seed germinated into me committing to going 1 year without alcohol. Now, it’s 3 years and moving forward. I’m also down 45 pounds since I committed to losing 90 pounds last December 1st. See your promises through. You can do it because you’re amazing! I don’t have many pictures of my dad, but I have this one of him and the machine he worked on for over 35 years to provide for his family. No matter how tired he was (he often times worked 16 hour doubles), he’d make it to as many soccer and baseball games as he was able. His, “C’mon, Marky Baby!!!” would ring through the air at those games and silently at all other times. He adopted me when I was 5 weeks old with my mom and never did I feel like he wasn’t his from inception. He was a character and had sayings I still carry on in his honor (he was a bit of a smart ass and I thank him for sharing that humor with me). I know I didn’t tell you enough that I loved you, dad.
