In the context of the ongoing university encampment movement in the US, I see a lot of people taking it as a win for spontaneity, or pushing for less organization, but what they fail to understand is that this movement is only possible in the first place because of years of organizing efforts. These actions are largely organized by the Students for Justice in Palestine, a student organization that has existed and has been putting down roots within universities for over 30 years at this point. The SJP has been supported by many additional organizations, which have also needed years to build themselves up. My local branch of the party I'm in has been working very closely with SJP in the encampment they started in our city. They specifically asked for our help, material support, advice, and analysis of the particular local political situation because we already had connections with them and they already trusted us. These connections are only made by the hard work of activists and organizers who put in a great deal of effort to not only build their own organizations, but to work with other organizations and prove the capabilities of themselves. This movement is anything but spontaneous, and to push for more spontaneity, for less organizing, is to push for the very death of the movement itself.
Lessons will surely be learned from both the successes and failures of this movement by the most serious organizations involved, and the experience we gain here will make the next big movement even more successful. However, these lessons can only be learned within organizations that make deliberate effort to study and deconstruct their own experiences, to analyze every aspect of every action and understand what worked and what didn't. These lessons must be preserved in the form of political literature, so that future activists can learn from our movements, just as we learn from the rich history of past movements.
