Attempting to work on WIPs after…life happened…has made me realize that all my writing skills have atrophied and I need to learn how to write again. Not sentence structure or punctuation. It’s the storytelling that I feel is lost. Not entirely sure how to get that back other than…practice? But not practice in the just keep slogging kind of way. I feel like I need training exercises…

So! I’m attempting to retroactively outline and plot out my WIPs!

And since a good number of them were just meant to be porn…sigh. At least I’ve given myself a challenge.

What they don't tell you about writing is that as you write, you discover scenes and entire plots that you hadn't accounted for that need to be written. So you can spend two hours writing and editing only to realise you're further away from the finish line than you thought you were when you started

Fic: I am about This Parallel between these two characters and how their paths were different because of Scenario. This is literally said out loud by a main character in the fic.

Commenter: If interpreted as This Parallel, the idea might work, but only if [describes Scenario].

Chipping away at an old WIP (do I have any other kind, no) and realized that I should probably rewatch Captain America: Winter Soldier again. For plot.

Then I realized...I need to watch Captain America: Winter Soldier AGAIN. My favoritest favorite MCU movie ever. I haven't watched it in ages. This is the opposite of a problem.

Sometimes good media shows its guts and wires and then I get really irritated because they are obviously better than that - the writers are just being lazy. Then I remind myself that some producer probably gave the writers a weekend to do This Thing Producer Wants and that isn't nearly enough time to hide all the guts and wires nor was This Thing Producer Wants likely to be a good idea in the first place so...not lazy. The show is inflicted with the dreaded Producer/Network meddling disease.

the actual reason I consume mediocre media is because I have bad taste. the deeper secret pretentious reason is because I think there’s something very revealing about bad media that you don’t get with good media. when you watch a poorly executed plot point unfold, you see the machinery behind it. you see the gap between what’s actually on screen and the true goal the author is striving for. if it’s particularly awful, you can even measure just how poorly mismatched the author’s skills are with the story they’re trying to tell you. watching a poorly executed narrative play out feels like you’re discovering something, because you see all the wiring and guts underneath that better authors hide from you, in the same way that movies hide boom mics and books make you forget you’re turning the pages. if a story is good and executed well you just see the story. but I want to see the guts and wires!
