2019 Topps Heritage Case Review - BIG TIME BREAKS
2019 Topps Heritage release day has come and gone. To celebrate, we opened up a sealed case of the product in order to help familiarize collectors with the different variations and short prints.
Here is what came out of our release day case:
Case #1 packed some serious punch.
Starting with the autographs.....
Real One Special Edition Kris Bryant = 1:1,404 Packs
Bob Gibson, Luis Urias and Jake Bauers Real One Autographs = 1:106 Packs

We were extremely pleased with the results of these autographs!
We picked up a very tough red ink redemption of KB, 2 top rookie autos, and a hall of fame auto as well.
It didn’t stop there....
We absolutely CRUSHED IT with our variations as well!
Error Variations = 1:4,583 Packs

We snagged 2!
1) Juan Soto (NATOINALS MISPELLING)
2) Shohei Ohtani (BATTING RIGHT RATHER THAN LEFT)
Team Name Color Variations = 1:245 Packs

We snagged 2 of these as well!
1) Mike Trout
2) Juan Soto
Action Variations = 1:41 Packs

We pulled 5 nice action variations in this case!
1) Shohei Ohtani
2) Kris Bryant
3) Mookie Betts
4) Corbin Burnes
5) Jacob Degrom
French Text Variations = 1:124 Packs

We pulled at least one of these. (probably more once we go back through them)
1) Chris Archer

We hit 3 chrome refractors /549 with odds of 1:101 Packs

Our 5 Chrome cards /999 were meh as well with the best one being rookie Luis Urias. 1:58 Packs

Our HOT BOX was more cold than hot, providing us with a bunch of blah, and an Aaron Judge SP.

We did land a nice Max Scherzer Mini /100 that runs 1:434 packs too!

While the case was a success, we were just as pleased with the quality and design of the product!
Topps Heritage offers little when it comes to “Hits”, however that has never been what this product is about!
I sort of enjoy the scarceness of hits in this product, as it actually makes pulling a real one that much more satisfying. It also keeps the value of these hits stable over longer periods of time.
Topps Heritage is for the serious set collector who enjoys chasing down elusive short prints and variations and building out master sets.
This is one of those products that is affordable, fun and valuable at the same time.

2019 Topps Heritage Baseball Advice
The 2019 baseball season is upon us, and along with that comes a whole lot of 2019 baseball product.
The first “major release” is 2019 Topps Heritage.
The goal of this blog is to help both new and veteran collectors identify good buying opportunities with this 2019 Topps Heritage.
Let’s dive in....
Top Plays
Our TOP 4 plays of this years 2019 Topps Heritage release are ...
1) Atlanta Braves -
The checklist for the Braves is simply STACKED with stars of both old and new.
Hank Aaron, Ronald Acuna Jr., Chipper Jones, Freddie Freeman & Ozzie Albies headline what I believe is the most valuable team in the product. Acuna has some valuable SP variations as well making this a slam dunk choice in 2019.
2) New York Yankees -
Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres lead the way for this star studded Yankee checklist. Unlike the Angels (listed below in our risky plays), they are backed up by fellow teammates Didi Gregorious, Luis Severino and Justus Sheffield (bonus since he was traded to Seattle well before the release of this product). If you’re feeling lucky, theres a Thurman Munson cut signature hiding in one of these cases as well. With the addition of some pricey Judge variations expected, the Yankees make for a solid and safe investment on release day.
3) Boston Red Sox -
Sneaking onto our top plays list is one of the most potent lineups in the product. I must admit, I was tempted to slide them above the Yankees, however I couldn’t quite pull the trigger. The SAWX are loaded with Hall Of Famers such as Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk and Wade Boggs as well as soon to be Hall Of Famers and superstars in David Ortiz and Chris Sale. Also included on the checklist are fan favorites Tony Conigliaro and Rico Petrocelli along with rookie phenom (one of our top sleeper candidates) Rafael Devers. Need we say more?
4) St. Louis Cardinals -
Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Joe Torre, Steve Carlton and Yadier Molina? Yea... STACKED. While they may not be the most popular team come release day, you would be foolish to not consider St. Louis with a lineup of that magnitude.
This leads us to our value plays.....
Value Plays
1) Oakland Athletics -
I was super close to throwing the Athletics on the “Top Plays” list. I have no idea what stopped me. Maybe my fear of being ridiculed? Maybe the name Oakland A’s? Who knows! But one thing is certain... They are by far my #1 value play of the 2019 season. Mark McGwire, Reggie Jackson and Rickey Henderson are who you are gunning for folks. They will be priced affordably compared to the “big teams”, yet pack a punch that can quickly deliver you the ROI you are looking for on release day.
2) Houston Astros -
It’s rare that you have a chance to buy low on super stars, but that is exactly what I see happening here. Altuve is coming off a down season which has seen his stock drop. Bregman and Tucker are the only other 2 names on the checklist. While this may seem like cause for concern to most, we see this as a huge buying opportunity. We expect Altuve to return to form this year along with his card prices, and are extremely bullish on Kyle Tucker. Tucker’s 1st Heritage Auto has a lot of room for growth. Oh yea, and Bregman is money! What may seem like a blah checklist to most should be gold for the bold.
3) Milwaukee Brewers -
First off, I love the fact that you are getting a shot at all the inaugural Brewers autos with this spot. These command a premium during the first few weeks of release, and this is more of a 2 week fun play than anything else. Sprinkle in the fact that I think the best of Yelich is still ahead of him (growth potential for his cards), and this makes for a very safe play on release.
4) Minnesota Twins -
Anytime you have a shot at 2 Hall Of Famers (Bert Blyleven and Rod Carew) with a safety net of Torrie Hunter and Byron Buxton, I say DO IT! In all seriousness though, Byron Buxton has nowhere to go but up from here, and I see 2019 being the season it all clicks for him. If that happens, you sure are going to be happy with those crappy Twins :)
Risky Plays (Boom or Bust)
1) Angels -
The checklist for the Angels is the definition of Boom or Bust. If you choose to go this route, you are looking Trout and Ohtani OR Ohtani and Trout.
While they do have some variation short prints as well, the odds of landing one of these is a tall task.
While both these players will bring quite the premium on the open market, it is not a play for the faint of heart.
2) Nationals -
Juan Soto headlines the checklist for the Washington Nationals this year. The checklist includes Juan Soto, Juan Soto, Juan Soto and Juan Soto. Yes... It’s a risky play for sure, however one that will pay huge dividends should he pop his head out in your case.
3) Mets -
While I am not usually an advocate for taking the Mets in any modern product, the Jacob DeGrom/Nolan Ryan combo is too tasty to pass up. While I wouldn’t get too heavily invested in them, it’s definitely a fun spot that is worth the chance if you’re feeling lucky.
4. Cubs -
While this Chicago Trio came very close to making my “Top Plays” list, I felt their checklist was a tad too bare. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Ernie Banks headline the Cubs checklist and make for a solid play on release day, however the lack of much else keeps them down in the ranks.
5. Other -
While this is more of a donation than anything else, I can’t resist throwing a few Shekels down on the chance at an Aretha Franklin or David Cassidy Cut autograph. Heck! You even have a shot at Mary Tyler Moore.
PLUS
You have a shot at the Mystery Player A & B redemptions which will be coming out of the product.
Consider this your Topps Heritage penny stock spot.
Hopefully this blog helped give you some guidance when dealing with what can be an overwhelming product on release day. While we mainly focused on the autographs, there is a lot of value to be found in the short prints and variations that will be finding there way into collectors hands over the next few weeks.
Enjoy your February 27th 2019 and let us know what you hit!
