A helpful guide on restaurant etiquette
If you seat yourself, for the love of God don’t sit at a dirty table (if you can help it). Honestly the only appropriate time to sit at a dirty table is if the president is sitting at the one right next to it and you want his autograph or something, but even then. Also, if you’re going on a busy night (i.e. the weekend) don't expect to be seated right away. If your being seated right away is so important, make a reservation.
Be polite to your server. I shouldn’t have to say this, yet it’s probably the most important point on here. Your server is probably very stressed out, tired and has more people than just you to serve. Have patience, and please, if your food doesn’t taste perfect, it takes a few minutes to get your drinks, they’re out of something,  DON’T BLAME YOUR SERVER! Believe it or not, they aren’t God, they often have no control over things.
How to respect your server: say thank you! Have patience (because a lot of things are beyond our control), make all requests at once, if you can help it (i.e. order your drinks all at once, don’t make them run back and forth), respect closing times (going to a restaurant 20 minutes before they close is not a respectful idea. Believe it or not, waiters have lives outside work, and just because your plans didn’t revolve around the restaurant’s hours, doesn’t mean that the waiter’s plans revolved around yours.) Be sensitive to the fact that your server is a human, may make a mistake or may be having a bad day. This is not an excuse for terrible service, but be realistic. Give a decent tip (if you’re not going to tip, then you shouldn’t be eating in a restaurant where tips are given). Or if you’re eating a restaurant that doesn’t accept tips (like where I work) let your server know you appreciated their service (it goes a LONG way, and really makes them happy).
and if you REALLY want to rock their world: Stack your plates and cups and silverware. I feel like only servers do that for other servers. I know a resident who does this where I work and I appreciate it so much!
and in general just keep in mind that the restaurant could be busy, they could be short on workers, or not have runners or busers. It takes a lot to make a restaurant team run smoothly. Going out to eat is a give and take experience. Have respect, this isn’t an easy job.

People who say servers are not allowed to complain about people not tipping because they can "choose another job"
Congratulations, you’ve just established that no one is ever allowed to complain about their employment because hey, why don’t you just find something else?
Yes, being a server is often hard, degrading, stressful, and overall kind of shitty. But there’s a reason the person bringing your food or serving your drinks is doing it. That job is the best possible approach they can take to solve whatever economic woes they have.
Whether it’s the only job they can find, or is the only one with hours that work with their schedule, or any other combination of factors, they’ve decided that job has the best possible value for them at that moment in their life.
I’m a full-time student, who does tons of work for student organizations, local political campaigns, writes free-lance, and still manages to have (somewhat of) a social life. My job where I work two nights a week and still have the opportunity to make over 200 bucks in one weekend, is invaluable. Granted, sometimes I make less. It really does depend on how generous people are feeling as well as well I perform my job.
I serve anywhere between 15-30 parties in one night, and serve countless more drinks than that. Sometimes, a party of say 9 people will come in about 30 minutes before last call. Because the bar is packed, they depend on me to get those last few drinks and shots in before the night is over. I clearly present a value to them as well, otherwise my service would not be needed. So when that party of 9 people orders 4 rounds of shots so close to the end of the night, it is added to the multitude of other people trying to do the same thing. That being said, if you run a tab of nearly 200 bucks in a half hour and leave me NOTHING in return, I have every right to shame you for that because you essentially just got a much needed service for fucking free.
Your servers are there for your convenience and whether or not you could do that job or not for yourself (you most likely can), is of no significance because you are making the conscious decision to use servers (and bartenders for that matter) to get the things you want. Now, show us some goddamned respect for waiting on your condescending ass and tip us.
Otherwise, since money is apparently such an issue, go buy a six-pack and drink at home. You clearly can not afford to go out.
