Haven't been able to get out to the record store lately, so scratched the itch with a few discogs purchases.  On the inside sleeve of the Cecil Taylor (once a library copy) someone has written "Don't Bother" (clearly someone was not a fan of free playing), but it is pretty amazing playing especially on the second side (I can't think of anyone who plays piano like this even to this day).
Yo La Tengo - And then nothing turned itself inside-out
Godspeed you! black emperor - Lift your skinny fists....
Cecil Taylor - Cecil Taylor Unit
Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
Mark Mulcahy - Dear Mark J. Mulcahy I love you (this one is also very recommended for fans of slightly odd songwriters like Kozelek, McCombs, Callahan, Richman, etc.)

Mississippi records is reissuing this entire thing. Essentially a complete reproduction of the original.
Kelly Harrell & The Virginia String Band - My Name is John Johanna
I remember 20+ years ago or so my wife brought this record home from the library of the school where she was teaching middle school english, as she was preparing lessons on American folk music. I had heard about Harry Smith’s anthology, one couldn’t be a budding Dylanologist without being aware of it, but I had never touched it before. And I was astounded - it was the most mysterious thing I had ever seen or heard, the packaging, the liner notes, but most of all the music. It sounds like - it is - a window into the soul of America, but the weird, strange soul. I listened for hours and hours, barely comprehending its scope.
Really, if there is one record you should own … .

Well may the world go, The world go, the world go, Well may the world go, When I'm far away. Sweet may the breezes blow Clear may the streams flow Blue above, green below When I'm far away. Well may the world go, The world go, the world go, Well may the world go, When I'm far away. Sweet may the fiddle sound The banjo play the old hoedown Dancers go round and round When I'm far away. Well may the world go, The world go, the world go, Well may the world go, When I'm far away. Swift may the skiers turn The swimmers churn, the lovers burn Peace, may the nations learn When I'm far away. Well may the world go, The world go, the world go, Well may the world go, When I'm far away.

About right
Tumblr media
In 1967 a 16-year-old Boston kid named Jonathan Richman was obsessed with a New York band called the Velvet Underground. He wrote an article about them for a tiny local rock magazine called Vibrations. And in that article he included this diagram, showing what he projected their career trajectory to be relative to some other fashionable bands of the time. (via this fine book)
