Durkhiem's famous "there is no church of magic" just seems completely false. Like, he points towards Greek mystery cults and makes the argument that magic is defined as existing outside of priestly structures. Magic has no priesthood, no congregation, etc. But this seems damn near factually untrue. History is full of organizations with full-on priesthoods and congregations that were designated as "magical" by other people.

I think a lot of the early scholarship around definitions of magic struggle with the fact that basically nobody ever calls themself a magician. From what I understand, there's no evidence that anyone was wandering around ancient Greece going "hello, yes I am one of the magoi and I perform magic." It is far more likely that people framed their activities as "no no you misunderstand, I am performing perfectly reasonable and pious theurgy, please give me two drachma."
