i saw this post earlier about therapists and it reminded me of my old therapist paul, who in my opinion is one of the greatest men alive and who did not put up with my bullshit for even one second
anyway i go in to see paul one week in the summer of 2016, and i’m doing my usual bullshit which consists of me talking shit about myself, and paul is staring at me, and then he cuts me off and says that he’s got a new tool for helping people recognize when they’re using negative language, and gets up and goes over to his desk
and i’m like alright hit me with that sweet sweet self-help article my man, because i’m a linguistic learner and whenever paul’s like here i have a tool for you to use it’s pretty much always an article or a book or something
paul opens a drawer, takes something out, and turns back around. i stare.
i say, paul.
is that a nerf gun.
Tumblr media
yeah, says paul.
i say, are you gonna shoot me with a nerf gun in this professional setting.
he happily informs me that that’s really up to me, isn’t it. and sits back down. and gestures, like, go ahead, what were you saying?
and i squint suspiciously and start back up about how i’m having too much anxiety to leave the house to run errands, like it was a miracle to even get here, like i’ve forgone getting groceries for the past week and that’s so stupid, what a stupid issue, i’m an idiot, how could i–
a foam dart hits me in the leg.
i go, hey! because my therapist just shot me in the leg. paul blinks at me placidly and raises an eyebrow. i squint again.
i say, slowly, it’s– not a stupid issue, i’m not stupid, but it’s frustrating me and i don’t want it to be a problem i’m having.
no dart this time. okay. sweet.
so the rest of the hour passes with me intermittently getting nailed with tiny foam darts and then swearing and then fixing my language and, wouldn’t you know it, i start liking myself a little more by the end of the session, which is mildly infuriating because paul can tell and he’s very smug about it
anyway i leave his office and the lady having the next appointment walks in and i hear what’s all over the floor? and paul very seriously says cognitive behavioral therapy tools.

And it's all thanks to him wanting to own Greta Thunberg
Tumblr media
This man literally posts a video of himself with pizza boxes to say he's not gonna recycle them in turn giving the Romanian authorities the confirmation they needed to know he was in the country
I just cannot get over how this man did not have to tweet at Gret Thunberg, nobody's said shit about her in like a year, he went at her unprovoked and self owned himself so hard he landed in prison like my God, who else on earth could be that stupid😭😭😭😭

What program is the best program to use for drawing? As well, any tips for people who are looking to get into drawing?
I don't have an objective "best", only a favorite, since it depends on the artist's preference! Also recognize I'm quite anti-adobe so I won't mention their products.
I believe the best way to learn digital art is by trying the great free programs out there. Here are some I've used before!
============================
[Browser] Photpea.com - Literally a free photoshop for your browser.
[Win/Mac] Firealpaca - Krita - Medibang - GIMP - All great programs! GIMP leans a little more on photo manipulation but you can use it for art just fine and it opens like every file type I swear.
If you're on IOS tablet then Procreate's always a great option but know it's a 10$ one-time purchase. I don't know about free programs there as I don't use it unfortunately...
============================
But to also shout out my current favorite art program:
Clip Studio Paint - (EX version for animation) -
A one-time purchase for an extremely powerful art program. It can do illustrations, animation, and even comics very easily, it supports vector line layers and 3D models for references if you need it. It keeps getting better with each update, goes on sale a lot and I can't recommend it more!
============================
Now for the tips.
The first tips I'd give someone starting to draw is to keep looking at art, gather inspiration, and have fun.
Your style doesn't come out of thin air. It's always a mix of details you've enjoyed of other styles (including real life!) with your own personal "spice" to it. I think figuring out what you enjoy and want to draw is the way to start.
Once you know what that is, find different ways to bookmark or gather images of that inspiration to keep around. Look at anatomy if you want to draw more realistic humans, look at different cartoon styles if you want to keep it simple or stylish. But most of all, have fun with it! Make OCs, draw yourself with cool powers, draw your favorite characters, draw cool robots, whatever you want even if it's not "perfect" at first. You will only get better, I promise.
Also I'd like to add this for digital art:
When first drawing digitally, it's normal to be overwhelmed with the amount of options on a program. There's like a thousand ways you can affect an image whenever you want.
My advice is to lessen your options at first and take your learning one step at a time. Limit your colors and limit your tools. Try to make some drawings with only 3-4 colors and maybe 1-2 brushes to start out.
There are some sites like Paletton (make your own) and Color Hunt(browse others) that can make color pallettes for you to try out if picking colors is hard!(It is for me...)
I hope this helps you a bit! :D

Hello! I was wondering if you had any tips for getting an industry job as a storyboard artist? I’ve always been interested, but I didn’t go to art school, and I’m not sure where to begin, or what studios look for in a portfolio
Thank you!!!
I didn’t go to art school either, although I was definitely lucky enough to have the time and parental encouragement to pursue art in my free time (and also mental issues that caused me to conflate art and my self-worth BUT I DIGRESS)--
the point is, your portfolio/reel is definitely what matters.  here’s some stuff people will probably(?) be looking for, in no particular order:
boards!  if you’re applying for a storyboarding position you should have actual boards in your portfolio.  animation is also fine IF you also boarded it and it demonstrates solid skills.  it can’t just be illustrations, though.
do you seem like you execute the style their shows are drawn in?  not just in terms of artwork but tone--some shows are looking for simplicity and clarity above all else, others are looking for artsiness and dynamism.  if one of those sounds like more fun to you, do what you love and apply to companies that are also doing that.
do you have a good sense of form/bodies in three dimensions, and how to place them in perspective?
basic board stuff--is it clear what’s happening in your boards?  are there any jarring cuts (sudden 180 breaks, jump cuts, etc.), do you use shot choice to convey focus/mood?  are the characters’ expressions readable?
more in-depth--do you pick interesting shots/varied compositions?  are you conveying the story of the scene with blocking?  are you considering who the POV character of the scene is?  if it’s an action scene, does it flow well?  does the pacing feel appropriate to the mood (a slow, thoughtful scene might have long, thoughtful shots, vice versa with a frenetic, panicked chase scene)?
,,,,stuff like that.  Sorry I Know It’s Kind Of A Lot.  board artists are kind of directors in their own right, but tbh I don’t think you need to have everything down pat to get a job.  people can tell when you’re at least trying to do this stuff and that goes a long way.  study shows and movies you like and try to figure out how the shot choices/flow contribute to their Goodness TM--it’s one thing to know something’s cool, and another to know Why.
anyway, obligatory disclaimer that also anyone can do whatever the fuck they want, have fun, art is fun and doesn’t have to be held to Professional Standards outside a professional setting.
and in fact, to answer your question, that is a GREAT place to start.  make the world’s most self-indulgent short-form OC animatic.  forget everything I said up there and just.  try some shit out.  get a free program like storyboarder, or make the art in firealpaca and put it together in imovie...anything anything.  throw spaghetti at the wall and enjoy yourself.
anyway that’s all pretty stream-of-consciousness but I hope it helps

☆HOW TO DRAW LIKE JINXY: PART ONE - GEMSTONE BASE COLOUR☆
I was going to do this as an ask response, but I realised it was going to be WAY too long, so I am posting it separately - and I ended up splitting it into two anyway!! XD
So anyways, here is a crappy tutorial by yours truly on how I draw gemstones!!!
Step 1. Sketch the gem you love want to draw a gemstone on. (This was a minute sketch, the ones I do in the comic are not drawn as quick or effortlessly as this one XD)
Tumblr media
Step 2. Find a good picture of the gem’s gemstone to use as hexadecimal reference. (Optional, otherwise you could just bullsh*t it and use whatever colours you want. I have done that in the past, and it works… most of the time.)
Tumblr media
Step 3. Create a new layer and outline the gemstone with the outline colour you desire (as seen above)
From here on, I have a choice of two things – starting the layering process straight on this page, or switching to a new document to leave it clean. Whenever I draw a gemstone in PIC, I usually do the second option. Gemstones can take up many layers – Spinel, for instance, has eighteen facets and one outline, which would equal nineteen layers (unless I choose to do two facets per layer, giving me less, or adding shine effects, giving me more). This raises the counter for layers per page, which makes my laptop super slow when I eventually export the page. So this is my solution –
Tumblr media
THE GEMSTONE PAGE!!!
As you can see, most of the gemstones I’ve drawn over the past few months are of Spinel. Two of them are of Steven’s gem as well. I’m sure a lot of these gemstones will look familiar, as most of them are ones I’ve used in PIC. Others do include my friend’s gemsonas/ocs, gemstones for ref sheets, or gemstones for pages of PIC that have not been released yet! ^^
But anyways, back to the tutorial –
Step 4. Copy the gemstone outline from the drawing, paste it to the Gemstone Page and move it to a free space.
Tumblr media
Here looks good!
Step 5. Start the facets!!!! I always begin with the biggest facet first. (Oh yeah, it’s a good idea to move the ref picture here as well XD)
The way I do it is by outlining it first, and then filling it in with the fill brush. Then I clean it up and crop it to how I want it to look!
Tumblr media
And there, first facet is done with base colour!
Here comes the fun part. THE REST OF THE GEM!
I usually go top-down in a clockwise direction, but it literally doesn’t matter which way you go. (KEEP IN MIND ALL THESE FACETS ARE ON DIFFERENT LAYERS!!)
Tumblr media
Four done!!!
Tumblr media
Halfway there!!!
Tumblr media
DONE!! Base colour facets are complete!! (And exactly nineteen layers all up!!!)
Now it looks as good as a gem from the show! If you’re happy with this, this is a good yet optional place to stop. Since the next part is just as long as this, I’ve decided to split it into two tutorials (two-torials?) and the second one will include my way of shading!!!
Regardless, for now, I hope this helps some people!!!
(NOTE: Below is what the gem commonly looks like if you remove the top layer. All the imperfections are what makes it perfect!! The top layer covers these up, after all :D)

☆HOW TO DRAW LIKE JINXY: PART TWO - GEMSTONE SHADING☆
And here’s Part 2!!! (Part 1 can be found in the hyperlink at the bottom)
Here’s a tutorial on how I shade gemstones!!! There’s a bit of a process with this one, but just so you know I’m self-taught, and I probably do it very differently to a lot of other talented people. So if you have any tips for me, I’d be grateful to hear them!!!
So anyways, here’s my tutorial!!!
Step 1: (also technically Step 6 because it’s a continuation off the last tutorial):
(I use FireAlpaca so I’m not sure what it is for other softwares, but ALWAYS REMEMBER TO ‘Protect Alpha’ OR ‘Add New Layer/Clip’ THE LAYER!! This is to make sure the shading stays ON the layer and not OFF IT)
Eyedrop the colour of the facet you’re shading (I recommended starting at Facet 1, a very good place to start~). Then, select a darker shade. (The brush you use in this part doesn’t particularly matter – however I much prefer using the Flat Brush!)
Tumblr media
^ …as you can see at the bottom of this screenshot!!
Step 2. Start with some basic swipes. Nothing ever starts off looking beautiful, believe me. It will look smooth soon enough!!
Tumblr media
Step 3. SMOOTH IT OUT!! Decrease the size of your brush and just let it smooth out the swipes. It’s absolute magic. This takes hardly any effort!
Tumblr media
Now, The basic shading is done. If you want, just add some subtle dark airbrushing to make it look softer.
Then it’s time for the lighting effects!!!
Step 9. Grab the Flat Brush again, make sure it’s small (10-25 is recommended), make it white or VERY pale, and then outline one or two sides of the facet! (No shading is necessary, just one stroke should do it!) (Using the Curve Tool keeps the line very straight if it’s too hard to use freehand ^^)
Tumblr media
Then touch it up how you want it, and done!!
Now, REPEAT STEPS 6, 7, 8 and 9 FOR EVERY FACET!!!
(It might get a bit tedious, but oh well :D whoever said art was easy?)
Tumblr media
Halfway there!!
Tumblr media
And finally, the shading is complete!!!!!
And below is just some optional finishing touches to make it a teensy bit more realistic… (Solid brush with 25% transparency on a clipping layer, gives the gemstone a more reflective and facet-y look XD)
Tumblr media
And the final step, Step 10! Compile all layers into a folder, and then copy and paste the whole gemstone back into the sketch!
Tumblr media
And there you have it!!! That’s how I draw all the gemstones you see in Partners In Crime and other things! I really hope this helps any of you who struggle with drawing gemstones or don’t know where to start ^^ if anyone has any tips to help me out (bc I’m self-taught and nowhere near as talented as a lot of artists here TwT) I would love to hear them!!!
AND, if anyone has anymore questions, I’d be happy to answer them!!!
(NOTE: Cabochon gems are much easier than faceted gems. They’re literally one facet. If anyone wants a tutorial for a cabochon, I would love to share as well!!! :D)

Art Advice #14 - Downloading and/or Creating brushes for digital art!
Hi all!
I got asked recently to give some advice on how to download brushes in digital art (since I mentioned it in my last digital art advice post) so, ask and ye shall receive lol!
Now, I’ll have to preface this by saying I only know how to download and create brushes for FireAlpaca (the program I use to draw), so things might be slightly different for other software.
(Btw thank you @hellsitevistor for your question, I hope this is somewhat helpful to you!)

i’ve literally only moved from cel shading to painting for a year, but i’ve become a lot happier with my art and having a lot more fun when drawing. i haven’t really done many colour studies but here’s a couple of things i picked up while imitating cel shading with painting :)
i also pick colours by shifting the hues and brightness on the colour wheel but i feel like other tutorials are better at explaining (and also i got lazy). or you can eyeball it. idk how i do it either
hopefully this can help someone, and i’m aware that i suck at being cohesive sometimes, so feel free to drop any questions via asks or dm! can’t guarantee that i can articulate stuff tho

How do you get the textures you use in digital art like that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so like, for stuff like this yea? There's several different ways to do things, but I have a few quick go-to methods that I use often, like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very fond of this brush "empire of dust", which is a really nice color shifting dual color metallic brush. I'll pick colors for my illustration and set it to an effects layer (color dodge, overlay, soft light, etc.) and then very gently erase parts of it with any number of my texture brushes. Really fond of this wood grain esp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
similar with this scratched gold and this Damascus brush (well, the entire brush set)
Tumblr media
The real magic starts to happen when you start mixing them together with different layer effects. I also use stock textures, textures I've made and collected over the years, and different painting methods (in procreate, no 'instant' way to do it, but stuff like duplicating my painting layer, darkening the bottom duplicate layer, and using that to create brush shadows--in photoshop you can achieve this with brush toolsets or stroke/drop shadow layers).
But that's pretty much how I do it! Excuse the sloppy edit, I did this on top of some coimc work lol
