My Top Five Albums of 2017- click the title to be directed to the album so they can quickly become your favorites too!
(in no particular order!)
1) HAIM- Something To Tell You
HAIM is a sister band born and raised in California’s San Fernando Valley. Few bands can pull off a second album that measures up to their first. (Haim’s debut album “Days Are Gone” was amazing). “Something To Tell You” is an expansion on the folk-pop, R&B, electro-pop elements of their first album. You’ll be dancing in the streets singin’ along to these cool sisters (the album debuted at #7 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart).
2) Paramore- After Laughter
Paramore’s fifth album, “After Laughter” is a smooth listen from start to finish. Each song is invigorating, full of cutting lyrics and perfect pop punk riffs. If you’re feeling betrayed or just have been broken up with, this album will get you through. Paramore just keeps getting better and beter.
3) MUNA- About U
“About U” is an enchanting album by MUNA, a dark pop band from Los Angeles. The harmonies and haunting beats throughout the album seamlessly match the intention of each song’s lyrics. From the first song to the last, MUNA will pull at your heart and have you dancing all at the same time.
4) Laura Marling- Semper Femina
Laura Marling’s sixth album “Semper Femina”, meaning “Always a Woman”, explores complex relationships between women. Marling broaches the subject with emotive, gorgeous, free-moving folk melodies. It’s as if through the whole song, we can picture a beautiful woman walking through a flowery meadow. Her poetry and ease for songwriting is evident throughout the entire album.
5) Deb Talan- Lucky Girl
“Lucky Girl” is Deb Talan’s first solo studio album in 13 years, where she plays every instrument herself. “Lucky Girl” leaves Deb Talan fans wanting for nothing; every song includes Deb’s soft, loving, forgiving view of the world. Her lyrics are beautiful poems gliding through her classic touch of comforting melody.

Listen to CTRL by Sza
Sza’s album CTRL has quickly become one of the most listened to albums of the year and was featured as number three on US Billboard’s top 200. The album features Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy, and Isaiah Rashad.
CTRL circles around a 20-something’s perspective of love, sex and relationships. Sza’s lyrics are similar to an unapologetic journal entry complimented by innovative melodies and catchy beats. She has raised the bar for new music being created by the R&B community. I think we can only expect good things from her in the future.
“That’s my greatest fear, that if I lost control, or did not have control- thing’s would be fatal” - Sza’s mom opening the album on “Supermodel”
My personal favorite tracks from the album are “Supermodel”, “Love Galore”, and “20 Something”.

Watch “Black & White” from The Staves Album If I Was
The video opens, setting the scene for a TV news report. One of the staff members walks up and tells the woman news anchor that “Scott’s been cheating on [her] with the weather girl”. The song starts and the video takes us through the news report. It turns out that Scott is the man news anchor, and they spend each commercial break fighting and yelling at each other. “Black and White” circles around the ideas of seeing yourself and the truth for the first time. The video shows this through something as heartbreaking as finding out that you’ve been cheated on. It’s a perfect take on the themes of the song, and a fun watch.

Meet This Week’s Artist of the Week: THE STAVES !
Sisters Emily, Jessica and Camilla grew up together in Watford, England. Together they create stunning harmonies and beautiful folk music reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash (to name a few). These sisters have an effortless blend, and a talent for creating some of the most gorgeous music you’ll ever hear.
Their first album Dead & Born & Grown was released in 2012. Since then they have released If I Was (2015), Sleeping In a Car EP (2016), Tired As Fuck/Train Tracks (2017) and most recently The Way is Read with yMusic.

In this adorable, aesthetically pleasing 60s style music video, P!nk plays house with Channing Tatum. The video opens with credits, announcing P!nk & Channing Tatum in a Goldenboyz Picture. The video is an homage to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
The video opens with P!nk and Tatum in a Mr. and Mrs. sleeping masks. They are sleeping in separate twin beds, with beautiful pink, silk sheets. P!nk gets dressed in a colorful house wife-y outfit, while Tatum sits on a couch still covered in plastic. P!nk irons a hole right through one of Tatum’s shirts, burns pies, and takes a ridiculous amount of medication while Tatum pours liquor in his morning coffee. This is all happening while P!nk is singing the lyrics “my love, my drug we’re fucked up”. As their morning drugs kick in, they do an amazingly cute little dance to the hook of the song.
“You punched a hole in the wall and I framed it”, P!nk sings as she walks by a literal framed picture of a hole that Tatum punched in their wall. She walks into their bedroom and finds Tatum cross-dressing for fun, and joins him. Flash to the day escalating quickly as they get drunk on martinis and P!nk ties Tatum to the couch.
This video is incredible because it seems like such an ordinary, nice 60s home, but its really like “theres something so untraditional and wrong here”. Its all in good fun though, “Beautiful Trauma” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Directed and choreographed by Nick Florez & RJ Durell.
