Details of this painting, for funzies

Smudged blood trail from Lareina stroking his cheek. Plus her face being quite red, and her eyelashes clumped together, from crying. Jonathan’s eyes are carved out to symbolise the fact that Lareina has eaten them. (It is canonically the only part of him she actually eats, so matter what this painting may tell you lol. This is more so symbolic of her thoughts and feelings during that meal than what actually happened).

They sort of naturally took on this white/black duality. I originally had Jonathan in his blue coat, but eventually removed it. It’s not really to indicate “good and evil” but rather all the ways they’re different. Most prominently, Lareina is alive and Jonathan is not. She is earthbound by dark colours, mourning, while John is accenting into the light. His crown is falling, and he’s very quickly losing his power in death.

He’s under her mourning veil. The whole action of consuming is a very intimate one
