I don't usually comment on these hymns, but Coventry Carol is extraordinary. As stated in the background, this song is part of a play called The Pageant of The Shearmen And Tailors. The Play, in turn, is one of the Coventry Mystery Plays put on each year in the town of Coventry, England, during the Coventry Corpus Christi Pageants, beginning in the early 14th century. No one knows who initiated the pageant or who authored the various plays, but it is thought that a young William Shakespeare was influenced by them.
