Peter Lenz ‘Lithium’ Release / OTOT / Kidambi, Branch, Lipscomb, Lopez
Pᴇᴛᴇʀ Lᴇɴᴢ 'Lɪᴛʜɪᴜᴍ' Aʟʙᴜᴍ Rᴇʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴡ/ Aᴀʀᴏɴ Nᴏᴠɪᴋ's OTOT ᴀɴᴅ Kɪᴅᴀᴍʙɪ/Bʀᴀɴᴄʜ/Lɪᴘsᴄᴏᴍʙ/Lᴏᴘᴇᴢ Peter Lenz composed the music for this album during a one-month retreat in the Austrian mountains. His music explores the intersections of diferent genres and combines influences of modern jazz, contemporary classical music and a dose of indie-rock. Twelve-tone rows, Messiaen scales and rock beats in the context of this agile jazz quartet create a sublime and atmospheric chamber music. Tonight's quartet features Chris Speed on sax and clarinet, Keisuke Matsuno on guitar, Marty Kenney on bass, and composer Peter Lenz on drums. peterlenzmusic.com _ Aaron Novik is a recent Brooklyn transplant that lived and performed in t...he Bay Area for 17 years. There he lead the bands Gubbish, Kipple, Floating World, Love Triangle Elementary School, Simulacra, Thorny Brocky and made records under his own name as well, including the album “Secrets of Secrets” which was released on Tzadik records in 2012. Aaron also performed with the bass clarinet quartet Edmund Welles, the Nathan Clevenger Group, Telepathy, Colin Stetson’s Transmission, Graham Connah and most notably in Fred Frith’s Gravity band, which has played festivals around the world. His OTOT ensemble brings Aaron's inventive compositions to life with joyful horns, sinuous clarinet, and an airtight rhythm section. aaronnovik.com _ Amirtha Kidambi is invested in the performance, investigation and exploration of creative musics, ranging from Carnatic vocal, free improvisation, experimental art rock and new music. As a bandleader with Elder Ones and as soloist, collaborator and ensemble member in groups such as, the early Renaissance inspired dark folk band Seaven Teares, the homemade analog percussion and visuals group Ashcan Orchestra, and vocal quartet Elizabeth-Caroline Unit, Amirtha has performed in a variety of venues from DIY spaces to concert halls including Carnegie Hall, Issue Project Room, Silent Barn, Whitney Museum, Le Poisson Rouge and The Kitchen. Tonight's new quartet features Jaimie Branch on trumpet, Jon Lipscomb on guitar, and Brandon Lopez on bass. amirthakidambi.com The Silent Barn 603 Bushwick Ave | Bushwick, Brooklyn L-Morgan, JM-Myrtle/Broadway | 8pm doors $8 | all ages Brought to you with love by Black Plastic Bag. www.blackplasticbag.com Sign up for Silent Barn's newsletter: http://tinyurl.com/barnlist Silent Barn is a Safer Space. Lunch Cult / Salt People / Ava Mendoza
January 6, 2016, 8pm The Silent Barn
Lunch Cult make bruised lo-fi skronk rock for closet optimists. "Lunch Cult Presents . . . Lunch Cult," this band of Mainers' debut album, is both spare and scuzzy, ripping through tightly structured instrumental passages and raw guitar pop with skillful playing and a no-fucks-given sense of humor. Come get your stickily little hands on a copy of the album at the show. Lunch Cult is in the middle of a two-week east coast tour, so please let us know in advance if you'd like the boys to bring you anything from Watertown, CT.
With a sound often described as indescribable, Salt People is a creative collective of young, free-thinking musicians raised by the subways of NYC, the city ingrained in its musical DNA. Audiences have been confounded by their love of cacophony, free jazz, funk and pop music, which the group mixes into an original sound. "A new generation of Kooks," says John Zorn.
Ava Mendoza plays guitars and stompboxes and writes music. She has performed or recorded with a phenomenal spectrum of artists, including Carla Bozulich, Fred Frith, Nels Cline, Tune-Yards, and many others. Ava's current project, Unnatural Ways, is a trio with Tim Dahl and Max Jaffe, but tonight she graces the Barn with a rare solo set.
