I have friends who have been through a lot of the fucked up shit I like to write about. (yes, even the stuff that is treated as fiction only, doesn't happen to real people.) it's loaded to say that the only way someone can be into something is if it's a kink thing; you can't say that without saying something very unforgiving about my ability to relate to my own friends, and other people in general.

Underestimated
Jude and Arthur pay Gerry a visit, with a special message for Gertrude Robinson.
The city was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that invited Gerry to pause after slamming the car door shut. He shared this night with something vicious. At first he thought it was himself. For most of the day Gerry had been driving up to Scotland, leaving early so he could arrive at the bookseller’s before evening. His original plan was to find a hotel after disposing of the book, but the exchange took more from him than expected; he just wanted to get home.
Home, he thought, as he stopped in front of the door. He was child all over again: waiting outside before going in, bracing himself crossing the threshold.
Gerry lit up a cigarette and looked at the sign naming the shop Pinhole Books. It hung there since he was a small child. Mary had commissioned it to look old. For all that she bitched about the ivory tower of academia and her supposed betters, she was also guilty of assigning reverence to old things, sacred just by virtue of not being destroyed.
Gerry snorted, shaking his head as he finished his cigarette. He stubbed it out under his boot, then reached into his pocket for his key.
“Isn’t it early for little vampires to be turning in?”

this bad boy is 4.5k, so I'm just linking straight to AO3. I've been coming back to this for five years, but I've finally finished through sheer force of will.

#as though all religion isn't based in belief in paranormal/supernatural beings but one step at a time on this webbed site. (via @bondsmagii)
yet another double standard that baffles me is that people will rush to accept other people's spirituality when it comes to freedom of religion/identity yet will openly ridicule people who believe in the paranormal. as though belief in the paranormal isn't the only kind of spirituality that transcends literally all religions and peoples. like why are you all so offended some people have experiences you don't. and why is it only certain experiences that offend you.
#i have had experiences that some of you guys could not even comprehend#then again a lot of people couldn't even comprehend my literal flesh-and-blood pure-this-world experiences#so maybe i'm setting my sights too high if i ask for more

it has to be some kind of sexual harassment to get on like the only interest that anyone could have in something is if it's a kink.

writing accurate to life dialogue is a lie i need to become ok with the fact i'll never be able to quite capture the organic moment where i announce to my spouse in a booming faux-australian accent 'are you ready to receive my limp penis‽' and know it is understood that upon an affirmative i am going to give my thoughts on some stupid online opinion i just saw and in fact limp penii have nothing to do with it whatsoever

here's an example of what I mean, if you're curious. I'm sure this is sometimes what's happening, but I find it shallow and self-important to assume that the only way someone can find something gratifying is if it's a kink. as though there aren't many ways to like something, especially in fiction.
I'm sure this isn't how most people actually feel, but the way some people talk and certain patterns of posting comes across like any slightly unusual, dark interest in fiction is either a kink, or a kink that you don't know about/are repressing because of internalised conservative values and squeamishness to sex.

it's also weird to put that kind of pressure on other people who are minding their own business. randos online are enjoying things in their preferred way, and a handful of people are treating that as a deliberate exclusion, akin to grand larceny.
(the theft? potential interactions/friendships.)
like bro they don't know you
fandom discourse along the lines of if it's ethical to [read fic but not comment] [like posts but not reblog] [discuss fic in a private discord server with your friends without telling the author] scares the fucking shit out of me.
it is a very vulnerable position to hinge your enjoyment of something on other people's reactions -- something that you can't control.
