Reading Nana for the first time and there’s a lot interesting about it. And this particular monologue from Hachi really spoke to me as the relationship between girls has always been something beautiful to me as a sapphic and something intense and loving and comfortable as the inherent nature of our relationship already breaks social norms so why try to fit the rules of what society wants and not just be ourselves the way we’re comfortable being? I was skeptical going in at first because I had worries about queerbait but I do very much think the story IS going for Hachi having comphet, with actual discussion on sexuality being common and while I’ve yet to read it paradise kiss has canon lgbt characters.
There’s something so special about Hachi and Nana’s relationship that really speaks to me. While I do hope to see them awknowledge their feelings out loud I think the platonic and romantic love they both share is equally important because Hachi views love as a way to fill the void in her. She’s lonely and latches onto people to compensate for her insecurities. We don’t know of any friends she had back home besides Jun. she doesn’t know what she wants to do with her life and often picks up her interests through other people and always tries to change herself to fit what others want from her and views men as romantic interests. To fill this void she personifies toxic femininity as her identity as a girl is the one thing she can latch onto to find a place in this world and something to tell her who she should be.

Hachi’s feelings for Nana isn’t JUST about her being a lesbian/sapphic/bisexual with intense comphet. But it’s about slowly learning to love someone as a person and all the emotions that come with it. They learn about each other, they’re there for each other in tough times, later on in the story I’m sure they’ll have fights to, it’s the true essence of love of wanting to be seen of what you are for the other person. I’d love to right about this more in deph when I’m caught up and maybe more on Nana O’s side.

There’s another interesting line of Hachi speaking about how she doesn’t know how to love someone else and there’s a lot to impact with that. Queer people are already inherently prone to identity crisis and loneliness but I think another reason Hachi is afraid of accepting her own feelings is the threat it would have on their current relationship

My favorite non nightcord sekai character is Minori and she’s also probably the most “underrated” of my favourites though I am a big MMJ fan in general. I’d love to see more discussion on her though and I’d like to do a big write up on her one day since I think she has a really lovely arc about accepting herself and what she’s capable of. As a creator and entertainer it can be hard to like your own work and you may compare yourself to others or think you’re not good enough because you don’t have the same strengths as others but no matter how much you struggle you’ll always have your good points. You will have something that makes you you and you should embrace your own uniqueness

There’s just smth how in their childhood only one twin could get love at a time like some sort of commodity and how that manifests in both twins attachment issues and identity crises particularly with how Shion is like “if I can’t be happy no one can” because she’s so tired of this corrupt system but also so so damaged so she wants to absolutely reck everything and tear it down

Happy birthday Ena!!!
I don’t know if I have time to draw so quick write up dedicated to some things I love about you
Nightcord is a complicated group of kids and Kanade, Mafuyu and Mizuki all repress themself to some extent regarding their feelings and Ena is the only one truly true to how she feels. She wears her heart on her sleeve in any situation and she just can’t lie to herself. This can make her seem like an unstable, toxic person with anger issues when worst comes to worse, but it’s also what makes her so compassionate for the things and people she loves and strong and pure. Ena hates this emotional aspect of herself. When Ena says she “hates that part of herself that desires attention” in Pale Color, it resonated with me for a lot of reasons. And I also think in this moment Ena was also including how she hates how emotional she is. She hates how emotional she can be and think it just gets in. the way of things. I don’t think it helps that both her brother and father are very very calm people and it’s so belittling when he berates her art in such a cold and apathetic tone. She thinks of herself as weak and pathetic for this side of hers…. But she refuses to repress it or herself.
And it’s partly because I think she just can’t bring herself to and it’s not in her nature. But I also think it’s connected to her art to some degree. Ena’s relationship to her art is very relatable to me and a lot of other artists and what I find so admirable about her is her desire to prove HERSELF and HER hard work. She could easily say she’s Niigo’s artist on her Instagram to get followers but she doesn’t want to because Ena wants to be seen for herself. Ena wants her and her art to be loved for what it is and she’s so desperate for that approval from others. She hates the word talent because it implies the idea that you either got it or don’t and that if she doesn’t have talent she’ll never be good enough for others. She’s determined to prove those who doubt her wrong.
Yes she’s messy, she’s not always the best person or says the best things, she’s hurt others, she’s been wrong, they’re times where she was so close to giving up. But it’s what makes her journey so powerful, she’s always her genuine raw self no matter what she’s feeling and even if those emotions are “ugly” her overall goal I can’t help but sympathize with because of just how much she cares about what she’s fighting for. I especially love how she treats her friends. She wasn’t great to Mafuyu at first and wasn’t always the best sister to Akito but she’s getting better and better. And she’s never a manipulative person. The way she stood up for Airi when they were in middle school was always admirable for me. She genuinely appreciates hard work and thinks no one should hide from who they really are. And I love how this is explored with her relationship with Mizuki. It her struggle to help her friend we see it explore her own journey to self improvement and accepting criticism for her actions on top of how unconditionally she’ll fight for those she cares about as the idea of Mizuki closing them self off and going far away from her upsets Ena dearly. Because her her mind, everyone should be allowed to be their true selves.
Thank you for reading, and once again happy birthday to this lovely girl
