Hevans in DWS…..

Because I need to talk about this right fucking NOW!!!!!
First of all you have to have a very advanced 4D mind and a pure heart to understand Hevans...
During I Wanna Dance With Somebody Sam looks at Kurt who pushes him to get up and dance. So supportive also I find it very cute Sam looked at Kurt.
Sam deliberately did not clap for Blaine’s solo (he also shook his head afterwards in disapproval omfg?!?!) but he clapped for Kurt’s….(he and Brittana are actually the first to clap too. wow. When you accept an apology on someone else’s behalf♥️)
Sam looking at Kurt’s texts while Blaine seethes to the side will always make me laugh LMFAOO
Not really related to the topic at hand but if this episode wasn’t a tribute episode and came out now Kurt would have sang yes, and? Instead
There’s so much to consider here…

Glee characters I think would THRIVE on Twitter
Sue: absolute MAGA troll grifter and also she’s a BARB like you’re kidding. She was made for this.
Sebastian: has been suspended 20 times, has “you block me = I own you” or “spread kindness✨” in his bio, constantly baits Kurt into fights by insulting his faves, constantly sets up his own faves, posts thirst traps all the time
Kurt: doesn’t instigate fights but can’t help but reply when someone says his faves tanked and gets way too mad. That one tweet that’s like “pitting your mom against Madonna on an app infested by gays is a crazy move” is about him. Live tweets constantly.

And here’s what he’d look like singing it

i would’ve forgiven rachel getting to sing creep over blaine if he got to cover closer by nine inch nails. i think it would’ve been funny as the proposal song.

i donnnnttttttttt like masc boring just some guy kurt of season 5 onwards, i really dont... the "he became actually confident and was able to stop relying on outlandish clothes as a crutch!!!" is reaaaally unsatisfying and lazy to me. it's like the visual equivalent of kurt getting into nyada with being alive (REAL song that shows SOUL because he is not wearing LAMÉ PANTS!) vs getting rejected for ntbnd (embracing yourself as effeminate and weird and gay is #cringe fuck kurt all my homies hate kurt) because having the message and conclusion for a character who was always an outsider and bullied relentlessly because of it to be that he should've just assimilated into society better is not good.
just as how kurt being shown that he needs to sing the song everyone picks ad nauseam in order to achieve anything is unsatisfying (and unfair) to his character, so is the message that real confidence can only shine through from within if you look indistinguishable from everyone else.
"but he is SO good that his being alive version is superior" true. probably. i still don't like it.
i would literally not care this much about his sharp 180 fashion change if it was not established to be such a huge part of his character previously.
not to mention that so many of his clothing choices before (especially in s1-2) were purposeful and sometimes relevant to the story itself. i can't even pretend there is any secret code to Pants and Shirt combo #31, not even with my delusional quest to find meaning to every kurt scene ever in mind.
i thought we learned this in laryngitis. i thought we learned this in the dalton arc.

I agree so much, you explained perfectly the dynamic between them that Blaine was aware of, and why it’s significant that Blaine would wait until Kurt had lost the hero worship of him to confirm his feelings. We even see it in NBK, when Blaine decides to buy Kurt lunch after Kurt talks about Karofsky being his first kiss with a guy, offering him friendship which is what Kurt needed the most. Instead of what Will does that same episode, where he kisses Beiste. I mean…the Will thing was meant to be a positive thing in canon lol but I think it says a lot that Blaine didn’t go that route.
And I hope you don’t mind me adding to the “they truly see each other” comment! But to interpret the Blaine and the pips line, or even “I know that today we need to practice doo whopping behind Blaine as he sings every solo in the medley of Pink songs”, as if they were meant to hurt or offend Blaine is just a fundamental misunderstanding of Blaine’s character. Those lines aren’t there for us to feel sorry for Blaine, they’re there to tell us why he loves Kurt.
Because Kurt is someone who’s really opinionated and isn’t afraid to tell someone how he feels, even if it can come across as blunt or rude. Blaine’s expressions after Kurt makes these comments aren’t meant to convey that he’s offended or put off by them, he’s actually a little impressed and starting to realize “oh, Kurt’s not afraid to tell me what he thinks.” And he likes that Kurt can be mean to him, and that he can be brutally honest. There’s even a bell toll after the Blaine and the pips comment that represents Blaine seeing Kurt in a new light. These lines are put in this episode where he confesses to Kurt, and not any other episode, for a reason! These comments and Blackbird (which represented Kurt’s needs for freedom and independence, which in Special Education Blaine tried to give Kurt advice to help him fit in, but he actually genuinely loves that Kurt is unique and doesn’t fit in, one of his last lines in the show is telling Kurt “you’re the only one.”) both work to show that Blaine loves the real Kurt, not just any person who’s willing to give him endless praise or assimilate easily into Dalton.
And being seen in a two way street because while Blaine starts seeing Kurt in a new light, but he also feels like Kurt is seeing him for who he is. It’s important that this episode comes after SLS and BIOTA, because that’s when Blaine’s image start to crack a little. In SLS he admits he’s only just pretending to know what he’s doing, and BIOTA is meant to show that Blaine is more than just the image Kurt had of him in his mind. And when Kurt treats Blaine like a person instead of perfect Warbler Blaine that he needs to impress, Blaine feels like Kurt’s seeing through the perfect image of him for who he really is.
And yeah, Blaine loves attention lol, but we see with the Warblers, who he leaves because he wants to go to school with Kurt, Sebastian, who he never dates, or even Tina! that mindless worship isn’t something he necessarily wants. He felt stuck at Dalton for a while, in his very first appearance in NBK he tells Kurt he felt like he ran away to Dalton, and in SLS he calls the Warblers out for being privileged porcelain birds. Kurt mentioning that he thinks Blaine gets too many solos is something Blaine likes because it challenges him, and he admires that Kurt is someone who feels restless at Dalton because he’s felt the same way.
I think if you choose to read and interpret the “Blaine and the pips” comment as Kurt just being baselessy rude and Blaine graciously not getting offended at him you essentially get rid of a far more positive and interesting read of not just Blaine himself but the core of their relationship.
Before OS, Kurt and Blaine are mentor and mentoree, idol and fan - there’s a very clear power dynamic present that Blaine is aware of and careful not to exploit. He gets to know Kurt at the lowest point of his life, where even a gesture as small and friendly as inviting him to have coffee has Kurt tearing up. Blaine choosing not to pursue Kurt is almost chivalrous in this context, because Kurt is emotionally mallaeable at this time and desperate for a friend who truly understands him, especially knowing the events of Grilled Cheesus (where his friends actively chose faith over his own wishes, even if what Mercedes wanted to give him was community rather than faith) and Duets (where he is treated as something so unsightly and uncomfortable to be around even just singing with him for two minutes would be enough reason for social ridicule - there is significance to him having to sing a duet by himself). It is also possible, from Blaine’s point of view, that Kurt is only crushing on him because he is the first other gay person his age he’s met. Choosing to pursue someone under these conditions WOULD be almost exploitative.
Part of why I believe this to be the case is him seeking out Burt in Sexy - he thinks Kurt is someone easily influencable because at this time, he can only base off how Kurt acts around a potential love interest by his own experiences with him. There is no other attainable cute gay boy to crush on so he could gauge how much is Kurt’s personality when trying to impress someone, how much of it is just Blaine being the first person who can be flirted with without terrible consequences or him actually being Kurt’s type.
Blaine needed Kurt to stop idolizing him so that he could break his self-imposed gentleman code of conduct and actually confess - this is why Kurt treating Blaine as he would any of his other friends (remember, they have been pretty inseparable for quite some time now, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that even Blaine could pick up on Kurt’s obvious favoritism) has significance and why it is only after this comment (and Blackbird) he finally wills himself to confess, because they’re finally equals and for the first time they truly see each other for each other.
#imagine Blaine in the most mindlessly supportive relationship ever. he’d still cheat on them to be with Kurt’s mean ass.#blaine anderson

@dicingvision I’m just now responding to this, but I saw your tags on my post about the colors in glee and I agree with what you said about appreciating the production! 🙂↕️ I really loved that the costume department wasn’t afraid to outfit repeat (especially for Kurt because I think it was so fun to see how he’d reuse the same pieces), and I think you would like this parallel where Kurt is wearing this half coat in Never Been Kissed when he tells Blaine about his problems where his outfit is almost funeral-esque, and on the first day Blaine transfers to McKinley where his outfit is much more casual to show he’s in a much better place in life! (He’s also wearing the same airplane pin he was wearing during a meeting with Karofsky in Furt)

i find it interesting that there are lot of character traits of blaine that are not only consistently canon, but i'd argue are part of his core design, yet they seem to be the most controversial to bring up?
it's a pretty defining trait of his early on that he IS a huge conformist, not only because a lot of his arcs focus on that (his position in the warblers, transferring to mckinley and trying to fit in with the ND - which is easily the first 15 or so episodes he is actively on screen) but also because he was needed to be one in order to properly foil kurt in season 2, who is pretty much the epitome of individualism.
this clash between conformity/individualism was also underlined by S5B and why they were on track for another break up. blaine LIKES being part of a team, even if that team is just him and his boyfriend meanwhile kurt is easily worn out by constant attention and compromises. he likes doing things at his own pace and likes that his mistakes and successes are only his (which makes sense with his parentification as well as his lack of friends up until the glee club - which is more just heavily implied but, come on)
blaine is also vindictive. when he feels hurt, he lashes out almost instinctually. when kurt makes him feel insecure about possibly crushing on rachel in biota, he compares him to karofsky. when finn spent the entire first few months antagonizing him after he transferred to mckinley, he just about calls sam a cheap whore when sams contribution is more valued and welcomed. he is terrified kurt will leave him after he graduates so he pulls away? he deflects by zeroing in on kurt getting corny text messages and humiliating him in front of his friends. when he feels left behind by kurt, he cheats. when kurt breaks off the engagement, he dates karofsky (and mind you, he gives zero heads up before their reunion lol)
it's also a very defining trait of his that he is obsessed with kurt. seriously, he is largely unaffected by the world around him otherwise. it is definitely a part of his decision to transfer schools so he can be with kurt more, he spends his entire senior year being hung up on kurt, he chooses to go to nyada so he can be with kurt again (pretty much why there is no indication of that before he tells kurt in glee, actually, where it serves as a veiled "we could be together again, right?" question).
also lets not forget the kurt shrine he keeps on his nightstand even months after their breakup.
or the kurt puppet.
and the thing is, i LOVE these things about blaine? i'd even go as far as to say that if he was more like the... hm. fanon version of himself i would lean on disliking him.
i love it when he is weird, mean and obsessive, just as much as i love it when kurt is weird, mean and obsessive himself.

An embarrassingly deep dive into the Klaine Animal duet
I did a personal ranking of Klaine duets and ended up at my pick for number one being Animal. Not that it was a surprise to me in any capacity, because it's one of my favorite Glee covers, but it did prompt me to try and word why I love this duet the most. And while saying "it's a good song and a cute performance" and leaving it at that would suffice just as well, I enjoy rambling wayyy too much.
First off: I am genuinely surprised it is not a more common number one pick?
While I am a total layman when it comes to music (I can only confidently say if I liked a song or not, it is beyond me to try and critique anything on a more technical level) I do think Kurt and Blaine both sound really good and complement each other well here, with the Warbler arrangement putting an interesting twist on an already good song.
I also think the performance itself is so carefree and works flawlessly as a music video on its own. The entire warehouse scene is really well shot and has a distinct color grading to it - one of my favorite shots in almost the entire show is the Crawford Country Day girls' knee socked legs framing Blaine when he gives his speech about how they need to be scream-worthy for regionals. I think it's a very playful shot, getting Blaine between the girls' legs, lol. I also like the foam machine, which is honestly just funny to me and I like thinking this somehow references the Jonas Brothers' foam spray stunt from the late 2000's - which just ties the more innocent, one-sided love and boyband appeal of the song and performance (represented by Kurt) with the more raunchy interpretations of the lyrics, explicitly chosen for the purpose of being sexy with a foam machine complete (represented by Blaine).
Animal is also just a surprisingly innocent song despite the context, since it captures a crush that is about to get serious and the yearning and uncertainty that comes with - my friend and I were talking about Klaine duets and after she mentioned this it clicked into place (and inspired this post).
Because Kurt is leaning so much more on the cute side of things rather than sexy that even when singing "you're just a cannibal and I'm afraid I won't get out alive" I buy that he's talking about exposing his heart and feelings to Blaine, a boy he's still trying to figure out - even if one with a dirty enough mind could interpret that line, in a vacuum, to be about sex.
(As a side note, it bears repeating that Kurt is such A CUTIE here. It's okay Kurt, I think you're sexy in a very adorable and virginal way.)
I actually forgot myself that Animal's lyrics can be considered kinda more flirty and dirty if you squint? And funnily enough, Animal is not as inappropriate as several other songs Blaine picks to describe softer feelings. I like the thought of Blaine choosing it as a "sexy" song and forgoing the "will they won't they" one sided love the song is actually about, to describe a more animalistic urge to "not sleep tonight".
Meanwhile Kurt sings it much more innocently. Partly, we know that Kurt has faced a lot of issues with his sexuality and that he loves romance and marriage. Even though we only get confirmation later in on the episode that he is actually uncomfortable with sex to begin with, we can already sort of deduce that based on how we saw him act around Finn and Sam - I don't want to digress too much, but Kurt was very far from a "sexual predator" considering his wildest fantasies boiled down to another boy singing him a love song and kissing him or that the showers is just a place for him to check what shampoo Sam uses and if it's right for his color treated hair - as well as how he is pretty consistently set up as the antithesis of an average teenage boy. Sex is the last thing on his mind.
And when you rewatch his performance, you GET that he thinks this is only about one sided love and it also contributes to his attempts at being sexy be so goofy and a bit cringey. Not only is he uncomfortable, but he does not see the song in the same way Blaine (and perhaps everyone else in this scene) does. Or at least, it's how I explain away the strike contrast between his demeanor in Push It (confident, he even slaps Finn's ass lmao) and Toxic (playful and a bit detached) compared to Animal (very silly...<3) aside from his recurring and staple trait of losing all of his cool and measured manner when he is working to impress someone, rendering him just so very cringe, like when he tried to impress Burt in Laryngitis, Blaine in most of Season 2 and June Dolloway in The Back-Up Plan (most notably).
While I absolutely feel like I am almost trying too hard to explain some indecency into the lyrics (when it is really not what it's trying to convey) Blaine does consistently misinterpret the emotions of people around him and I'd argue, of his own as well. Would he really pick up on the emotional core of songs that easily?
While this may be an almost appropriate enough segue to talk about why Glee being a musical dramedy plays a lot into how one should interpret the songs and musical performances accompanying them at length, I will refrain for now and condense my thoughts on it: Glee (at least initially) follows the adage "when words are not enough to express your feeling, you sing, and when song is not enough, you dance" and the comedy usually takes a backseat (or is played straight faced) so the emotional state of the characters can shine and guide the story. I guess it is up to you how much you are willing to indulge in the characters themselves picking songs rather than the writers, but I find it much more satisfying to consider them part of the narrative and characterization just as much as you would dialogue, for example.
Thus, Blaine consistently choosing inappropriate songs is an interesting look into his character: he picks When I Get You Alone as a serenade song for Valentine's Day, Candles to sing with his fresh new boyfriend, It's Not Unusual to express his happiness over getting to spend even more time with his boyfriend, Cough Syrup as an inspirational song and not to mention the two break up songs he sings to (and with) his brother.
I don't think it is that much of a reach to think Blaine read "No, I won't sleep tonight / Oh-oh, I want some more / Oh-oh, what are you waiting for?" and went "Oh yeah this has crazy sex appeal".
If Baby It's Cold Outside is a look into how Blaine pursues Kurt, Animal is a look into how Kurt pursues Blaine and why I believe they are so prone to miscommunication.
In BICO, Blaine is crowding him and not taking his teasing protests seriously, which is pretty much what the song is about - a cheeky "we know we shouldn't REALLY do this, but let's anyway" duet from a time when women weren't allowed to express such forward interest. It, coincidentally, fits really nicely with the narrative of two gay school boys alone in some common room who end up flirting, despite the society they live in harshly discouraging them to do so and would not let them perform the song together. You know, as two artists.
Later, however, we find out that Blaine can't easily differentiate Kurt's teasing from his hard no's, so he interprets all of Kurt's actions, someone naturally impish, to be sarcastic most of the time. I don't think it is an entirely off-based assumption by Blaine, but since he is not exactly the best at reading people in the first place, it's even harder to discern for him how Kurt feels, who is more subtle about his emotions than most people.
But it works this time because Kurt is into Blaine, is teasing him and wants him to crowd him.
Kurt has a tendency to never really say word for word what he expects of Blaine so Blaine takes everything Kurt says either at face value or tinted by Blaine's own wants and needs - I firmly believe the scene in the Lima Bean from TPPP is the first time Kurt actually does come out and say he seriously wants Blaine to transfer (and why Blaine drops everything to do so rightaway). Or why such controversial scenes that can turn people off this pairing entirely, like the car scene of TFT or the entirety of their DWS plot, could happen. They always had pretty severe communication issues.
Which is why when the song ends with them sitting down so close to each other, Kurt almost expects a confession after such an undeniably flirty duet (you did NOT make it all up in your head, Kurt!) but Blaine would rather run away from the sudden closeness (and ambiguity) instead and promptly exits. He is not there yet to recognize his own feelings.
Meanwhile, everything Kurt does in Animal is a clumsy attempt at seduction (which he has no experience at). He does high kicks, rolls his hips, tries to stick his tongue out as much as he can when singing the words and is not put off by, or even registering Blaine's worried and confused glances at him.
Kurt has a tendency to be so romantic it dips into delusion. We see this a lot with Finn in S1 and until The Lamp Incident of Theatricality, Kurt is ascribing romantic undertones to Finn's actions very generously and guards what he wants to see of Finn very closely to his heart (a knight in shining armor devoted to him), shielding it from the cruel pain of reality (Finn being an easy-going and nice, straight guy who is very susceptible to peer pressure and a bit too dumb). You can see this the best in Home, when Kurt shows off a bunch of swatches to Finn very proudly and Finn manages to break the illusion for a bit - telling Kurt he has a cowboy wallpaper and ultimately, does not care about something Kurt does so deeply for. You can even see Kurt's expression shift at this moment - but then Finn ends up indulging him and randomly picks a color and that's enough for Kurt to consider it another common interest they can share, going back to fantasize about their future shared room's decor.
The lyrics of Animal are just much more relevant to Kurt than they are to Blaine, even if the lines "It's getting heavy and I wanna run and hide / I wanna run and hide" are some of the most Blaine lyrics ever.
I think Animal also stays relevant even until the next time we see Kurt trying to seduce Blaine in S6 - especially with the first line of the song being "Here we go again", setting up this cyclical nature of the relationship the song is about right away - they get close because they move each other down to their cores and want more, until they get sick of each other again, only to then go back to the pining stage - not their first time at this either, because they have already cycled through this in S4.
"And I won't be denied by you / The animal inside of you" may also be some of the most Klaine lines I have ever read, because their relationship lies on the foundation of sentimentality and this inexplicable, deep attaction to each other that regularly overrides common sense.
I also love that in-universe, Blaine kinda already made Kurt his duet partner (since they ARE technically training for regionals here) and also that he did not give a FUCKKKK about any of the other 15 or so warblers.
No notes, 10/10, five stars, etc etc, if Animal has 0 fans I am dead.

Possible To Do List 📝
Kurtina and Kurttany interactions post 🗂️ its srs to me. It’ll take a long time because I didn’t keep track of them when I did my extensive season 1+2 notes…but I need the world to know Kurttany were holding hands during And I Am Telling You
I’d like to do a Hummelberry one too but this one would not be a labor of love I would do it out of malice and sheer pettiness with hate in my heart because I dislike Hummelberry yet I need to prove (to the voices in my head) it’s not because I don’t “get” them. I can name every single interaction they ever had and I understand them completely. And yet it does not move me.
My thoughts on every single glee character. Seems like a daunting task though…maybe I’ll break it up by character or in groups 🤔
Biota Klaine breakdown….this too seems like a daunting task don’t know if I’m ready
Loonaverse posting…maybe some movie reviews…don’t know if I should just make a new blog or consolidate all of it here.
Actual To Do List 📑
Kurtcedes in grilled cheesus church scene explanation
My history with glee + general thoughts and seasons rankings
