Vladimir Tretchikoffâs Lady from the Orient, sold for a history making record breaking R31,892,000

On the evening of May 27, 2025 Africaâs premier auction house, witnessed history as Vladimir Tretchikoffâs iconic 1955 painting, Lady from the Orient, sold for a staggering R31,892,000 (approximately US$1,776,017), smashing the artistâs previous auction record. I had the privilege of attending the live auction in Johannesburg, where the electric atmosphere underscored the paintingâs enduring appeal. This sale not only marked a new financial milestone for Tretchikoff but also reaffirmed his status as a titan of 20th-century art, blending fine art with popular culture.

Art History: A Fusion of East and West
Vladimir Tretchikoff (1913â2006), a Russia-born South African artist, painted Lady from the Orient in 1955 during his most prolific period after settling in South Africa in 1946. Known for his vivid, theatrical style, Tretchikoff drew inspiration from his early life in Shanghai, Singapore, and Java, infusing his work with Eastern influences. The portrait depicts 21-year-old Valerie Howe, the daughter of a Cape Town grocer, in a striking green silk gown. Tretchikoffâs use of a Technicolor palette and Hollywood glamour echoes the romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelites, as noted by British art critic William Feaver in a 1974 BBC documentary. The painting captures an idealized feminine beauty, positioning Howe as a "spiritual pin-up" that blends mass appeal with artistic depth.

Lady from the Orient became a cultural phenomenon when its print edition soared to fame in 1960s Britain, becoming the second-best-selling print in 1962. Alongside Tretchikoffâs other iconic works like Chinese Girl (1952), it cemented his reputation as "The People's Painter," a title reflecting his ability to resonate with a global audience. His self-taught approach and focus on detailed portraits and still lifes often drew comparisons to Andy Warhol for their bold lines and vibrant colors.

Financial History: A Steady Climb to Record Heights
Tretchikoffâs market has seen significant growth over the decades, reflecting his enduring popularity. His earlier auction record was set in March 2013, when Chinese Girl sold for ÂŁ982,050 at a London auction. However, Lady from the Orient had been a coveted piece for collectors even before its recent sale. The paintingâs estimate at auction was R5â7 million (approximately $266,790â373,534), but intense biddingâ89 bids in totalâdrove the final price to R31,892,000, far surpassing expectations. Auctioneer Alastair Meredith noted the excitement, remarking, âWeâve breached the $1 million mark,â as bids soared past R18 million.
This sale reflects a broader trend of robust interest in Tretchikoffâs work, fueled by renewed scholarship and museum attention over the past two decades. Posts on X following the auction highlighted the global buzz, with users like @News24 and @WhatSellsBestnoting the $1.7 million sale as a testament to Tretchikoffâs lasting appeal. However, the Russian paintings market has faced challenges since geopolitical tensions in 2022 halted dedicated sales at major auction houses like Sothebyâs and Christieâs, making this record-breaking sale at the auction house even more significant.

Owner History: A Journey Across Generations
Lady from the Orient was acquired directly from Tretchikoff by Mr. Jim Keele in Nassau, a collector who recognized the paintingâs potential early on. It remained in Keeleâs possession until his passing, after which it was inherited by his descendants. The paintingâs provenance, documented by the auction, underscores its careful preservation over the decades, adding to its allure at auction. The anonymous telephone bidder who secured the work on May 27, 2025, after a fierce bidding war with an in-room contender, now joins this lineage, continuing the paintingâs journey into the 21st century.
Recent History: A Moment of Triumph
The sale of Lady from the Orient was a highlight of Strauss & Coâs flagship live auction, which also featured works by South African luminaries like William Kentridge and Irma Stern, collectively earning over R62.9 million. The painting was exhibited at the RMB Latitudes Art Fair from May 23â25, 2025, alongside other modern and contemporary works, drawing significant attention before the auction. , The Head of the house's Art Department , emphasized the paintingâs iconic status, noting its ability to command record prices decades after its creation.
As I stood in the auction room, the energy was palpable. The dramatic flurry of bids and the final applause as the hammer fell at R27 300 000 when what we whtinessed at the shredded Banksy occured, another bid came in after the pandemonium ensued at history being made when the last offer came in over a call settling at R31 892 000, captured the paintingâs profound impact. Lady from the Orient continues to captivate, proving that Tretchikoffâs visionâbridging Eastern mystique, Hollywood allure, and universal appealâremains as relevant today as it was in 1955.

Red Bull BC One South Africa | B-Girl Courtnaé & B-Boy Reign Supreme Again
In a cypher full of legacy and fresh talent, B-Girl Courtnaé Paul and B-Boy Toufeeq proved once again they're the breakers others in SA are measured by.

Emerging victorious at the 2025 Red Bull BC One South Africa Cypher, these two champions have cemented their place at the top of the game, in what has now become a showcase of the best of the best in South African breaking.

B-Boy Jandre
This yearâs event marked a milestone (18 years of Red Bull BC One in South Africa) and fittingly delivered a final battle lineup that was as elite as the competition's legacy itself. With the strongest bracket the cypher has ever seen, the national final was nothing short of a masterclass in skill, resilience, and artistry.

B-Girl Funky Child
For B-Girl CourtnaĂ©, her win was a hard-fought triumph in a rematch thatâs quickly becoming one of the fiercest rivalries in local breaking. In a repeat of the 2024 final, she went head-to-head once again with B-Girl Keisha, the 2023 champion known for her musicality and footwork finesse. Both breakers pushed the limits of creativity and stamina, but it in the end it was CourtnaĂ©âs experience, and performance precision that earned her the win. This was her second national title on the trot and third in total after also winning in 2021.

B-Girl CourtnaĂ© PaulÂ
âI was super excited and a bit shocked,â said CourtnaĂ©. âKeisha is a tough competitor, and every time we battle, it brings out the best in both of us. Getting this win made all the training worth it. Shout out to Red Bull for such an amazing and premium competition, and for putting us SA breakers on a world stage.â

Sizwe Alakine Reason
In the B-Boy division, Toufeeq once again stamped his dominance, claiming his third consecutive national title by defeating another OG breaker, B-Boy Jandre, in a high-octane final that brought the house down. Known for his seamless transitions and competitive composure, Toufeeq showed why he is the best of the best.

Dj Switch
âThis win means everything,â said Toufeeq. âI havenât had the best two years, and this victory is a reminder that staying consistent always pays off. I'm honoured to represent South Africa again on the world stage, this time in Tokyo. I just want to soak in the culture, learn and represent my crew and country to the fullest.â

B-Girl Keisha
B-Boy Jandre, his final opponent, is no stranger to the BC One floor. Known for his sharp control and unique rhythm, Jandre brought style and strategy to every round, making Toufeeq earn every inch of the win. Their final was a clash of power versus polish, and one of the most talked-about battles of the night.

B-Boy Swae V
The 2025 edition of Red Bull BC One South Africa was a celebration of the highest calibre of breaking talent in the country. The expansion of the B-Girl category to a Top 8 format showcased the depth of female talent across the nation, while the return of multiple past champions raised the bar to unprecedented levels.

B-Girl Lisa. B-Boy Da Vinci.
As both CourtnaĂ© and Toufeeq prepare for the Red Bull BC One World Final in Tokyo, they carry with them not only their own dreams but the hopes of the South African breaking community. Theyâve already proven themselves here. Now, itâs time to take on the world.

Finally got to talk to the legendary stroke game pop art Expressionist : Pricasso!! & Here's how it went down...
Shout out to you for coming to SA , all the way from Austrailia Beechmont, Queensland, So what inspired you to use your unique method of painting?
I got devices for the second time and made a commitment to myself to be happy for the rest of my life, so I mad a list of what really makes me happy and The answer was obvious holding on to my penis . So when I saw a show called puppeteer of the penis it was a light bulb moment.
.2 From the works of other more "Famous people" like Trump, Mr. Bean ,Sir Richard & Robert Mugabe dose the work reach them and what is the response like?
Famous people are a bit shy at getting painted and are usually not the best models I have being hired several times to paint at parties and TV shows but I have learnt I do need a good few days to get over Jet lag usually I am taken the following morning or straight from the airport to the party and the paintings and my mental capacity suffer greatly.
From a glance one can't ever tell if that's just pure dick covered in paint, do you paint with your penis raw or do you wear protection?
I only put on Olive oil lots of it on my dick and body Itâs great protection feels good and is edible Â
One can only wonder how penis lovers might get aroused watching you work, Dose your work affect your sex life?
Iâm 75 now and it still works much as it did all my life I paint lots of orders in front of a video camera in my studio so I always like to keep it looking slightly chubby so there is a lot of wanking which I mostly edit out unless the customer specifically requests a erotic video then I go over the top . So most days I think my body is producing natural testosterone and keeping fit flexing muses masturbating for long periods of time and finally the orgasm. Â
Most schoolers would describe your style as caricature Expressionism do you agree, if not then what should art history refer to it as & like most art movements do you have a succession plan?
I come from a artistic family one of my ancestors named Thomas Patch 1720 to 17 90-ish lived in Florence and painted portraits of rich British tourists He got into trouble from the pope for being GayÂ
Cool , its Shame he had a less considerate pope. So While at the Sexpo standing there watching you do your remarkable work may woman would ask me dose it still get hard so now I'm curious.
Oh yes I paint at lots of Swingers clubs and people yes women and men sometimes  want to find out so I let them mostly with a crowd of people watching  I could send you lots of photos of people going to town on my dick balls and anus.
lol No thanks I'm good, One can only imagine the number of galleries dying to work with you , would like to like to send a shout out to the ones you have worked with & the ones you'd like to work with, Where have you exhibited your work?
I have exhibited in Sweden Macour china  And America I  do have an exhibition next month in Melbourne Australia bu mostly I have a Gallery in my studio and I am painting a series of famous people politicians as various animals for my gallery more main stream friendlyÂ
What message do you hope to convey through your work?
World peace eradicates greed .Donât worry about conforming to other peoples standards you only live once and probably wonât be remembered after your dead for having a bit of fun.
What's your favorite song?
Thatâs Amore Dean Martin a radio station in Australia changed it to Thatâs Picasso so I use that recording frequently.
Any Sex Education advice to the Blazers? ...Safe sex and lots of it.Â

A retrospective of Dr Esther Mahlanguâs iconic lifeâs work at Wits Art Museum

Event: Art Exhibition
Title: Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective
Dates: 20 November 2024 â 17 April 2025
Dr Esther Mahlanguâs acclaimed retrospective exhibition, âThen I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective,â is set to captivate Johannesburg audiences at the Wits Art Museum (WAM). Following its successful run at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, this landmark exhibition, supported by BMW Group South Africa, WAM, and the National Arts Council, will open its doors to the public on 20 November 2024.

Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, the retrospective offers a profound exploration of the life and artistic practice of Dr Mahlangu, a national treasure and global icon. It chronicles her remarkable journey, from her humble beginnings in a small village in Mpumalanga to her international recognition as one of the most influential artists of her time. In a comprehensive collection of archival materials spanning five decades, the exhibition celebrates Dr Mahlanguâs significant contributions to and lasting impact on contemporary art.
âDr Mahlangu is a living symbol of triumph over adversity. As one of the first South African and female African artists to achieve global recognition, her warm personality and ability to inspire creativity have established her as a matriarch and mentor in contemporary art,â says exhibition curator Nontobeko Ntombela. âHer artistic approach continues to inspire younger generations and emphasises Africaâs rightful place at the centre of the art world.â

Craig Mark, Director of The Melrose Gallery, shared Ntombelaâs sentiments, noting, âFew South African artists have had the chance to present a retrospective of this scale. We hope this exhibition can pave the way for a global tour, creating opportunities for other South African artists to access these long-restricted museum spaces.â
Dr Mahlanguâs BMW 525i Art Car, a milestone in the history of both art and automotive design, is a highlight of the retrospective exhibition. Created in 1991, this iconic vehicle marked a historic moment as her work became the first by a woman and an African artist to be included in the prestigious BMW Art
Car Collection. Its return to Gauteng after over three decades allows local audiences a unique opportunity to experience this world-renowned masterpiece.

âDr Mahlanguâs extraordinary legacy is a testament to her pioneering spirit. Our longstanding relationship with her, culminating in the return of the BMW 525i Art Car, is a celebration of her artistic brilliance and our joint effort to push the boundaries of creativity,â says Thilosh Moodally, Director of Government Affairs and Communications at BMW Group South Africa. âI am proud to say that we have a long and rich history of supporting the arts and culture and remain committed to using our platform to promote innovation.â
The WAM retrospective invites audiences from Tshwane, Mpumalanga, and surrounding areas to immerse themselves in the iconic world of Dr Mahlangu. This special regional tribute honours her deep connections to both Gauteng and Mpumalanga. âWits Art Museum is honoured to host this retrospective, showcasing the remarkable scope and vision in Dr Mahlanguâs work,â says Julia Charlton, WAM Senior Curator.

Bettina Korek, CEO, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries hailed Dr Mahlangu as âone of the most important artists of her timeâ at the unveiling of her large 9m x 5m mural as the opening event for the VIP Programme for Frieze London in October. The artwork is titled âUmuntu ngumuntu ngabuntuâ and translates from isiNdebele to âI am because you areâ, emphasising human kindness, connection and community. This is her first public mural in the United Kingdom, painted over sixteen wooden panels.
âThen I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospectiveâ will be on exhibition at WAM from 20 November 2024 until 17 April 2025. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.

About Dr Esther Mahlangu
Dr Esther Nostokana Nagiyana Nikwambi Mahlangu is a celebrated South African contemporary artist known for her innovative work that pushes boundaries beyond the traditional mural. Widely recognised as one of the most influential artists across generations, Dr Mahlangu began her artistic journey at the age of ten under the guidance of her grandmother and mother, learning the traditional techniques of isiNdebele mural painting. Her contemporary works, which span a wide variety of non-traditional surfaces, found objects, and automobiles, build upon this rich tradition.
Dr Mahlanguâs participation in the exhibition Magiciens de la Terre (1989) in Paris shot her to fame, marking the launch of her transition from a communal practice into her own agency as a contemporary artist. Shortly thereafter, in 1991, she became the first woman artist and African to paint a BMW Art Car. Dr Mahlangu has exhibited in over 20 countries, sometimes with multiple solo shows in at least seventeen different cities.

She has painted murals across eight different countries and participated in residency programmes with institutions like Project Row Houses (2005), LâAssociazione Culturale Colonos (2009), and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2014). Some of her more significant engagements include Documenta IX (1992), the 5th Biennale of Contemporary Art (2000), the 1st Malindi Biennale (2006), and the 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2009). Dr Mahlangu's collaborations with the BMW Group span decades, including the 1991 BMW 525i Art Car, the Electric AI Canvas at Art Basel 2023 (which featured AI-generated animations based on her designs projected onto a BMW i5), and the 2024 BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, a one-of-a-kind vehicle combining colour-change technology developed by BMW. Dr
Mahlangu has also worked on projects with fashion brands like Comme des Garçons (1991), and shoe companies Melissa (2009) and EYTYS (2015). In 2016, she created the Belvedere (RED) bottle design, which helped fund a campaign against HIV/AIDS. Dr Mahlangu's works are represented in over 27 public institutionsâ collections, and her work is also held in private collections around the world. She continues her artistic career to this day.
