Something people often don´t consider regarding Imelda
.We all know Imelda is a fierce, independent and strong-willed woman. And the whole Coco fandom agrees that having to make a living for herself and her child all alone after being “abandoned” by hector made her into the strong woman she is (I´m sure she got help from the twins, but they seem to be younger than her so I imagine there was just so much they could do).
While I completely agree with that, I feel like there´s something about Imelda people often disregard: Imelda was a single mother in a rather difficult period of Mexican history.
From the date on the Rivera´s shop, she opened the business in 1921, presumably after spending some time teaching herself the trade and probably saving money for the initial investment (materials, tools, eventually a place which may have been rented or bought). In 1921 Mexico was NOT a very peaceful place, specially for a single mother with a small child.
Mexico had JUST emergerged from the Mexican Revolution, a decade-long conflict, involving so many players, factions and politicial interests I couldn´t possibly summarize it here. It was also a VERY violent conflict in which anywhere from 1.3 to 2 MILLION Mexicans perished, a number that included civilian casualties.(which may explain in part why news of Héctor´s death never reached his family. Social structures were still in disarray and Ernersto probably didn´t even need to try too hard to make sure Héctor would be buried in some unmarked grave. Those were probably abundant)
The Presidency of Álvaro Obregón (1920-1924)  wasn´t all that peaceful (even though it was the first stable government Mexico had in a while). A former general of the Mexican revolution, Obregón came into power after launching a revolt against then president Venustiano Carranza and assassinating him.
In 1923,  half the Mexican army joined a revolt led by  Adolfo de la Huerta, finance minister intent on usurping Obregón like he had done to Carranza. There was a conflict between the government´s troops and the rebels, and Obregón eventually crushed the rebellion, which was followed by many executions.
Fastfoward to 1926,  Plutarco Elias Calles presidency (1924-1928) and we have the Cristeros revolt also known as La Cristiada, a conflict taking place  central-western Mexico against the secularist, anti-Catholic and anti-clerical policies of the Mexican government. Calles had sought to eliminate the power of the Catholic Church and organizations affiliated with it as an institution, and also suppress popular religious celebration in local communities. This resulted in a massive, popular rural uprising supported by the Church hierarchy and aided by urban Catholic support. This revolt was the last major peasant uprising in Mexico following the end of the military phase of the Mexican Revolution in 1920. ALL OF THAT happened in the first decade after Héctor´s death, while Imelda was presumably working to start and stablish her business.
Look into how it was for Mexican women then: they got the right to vote in the early 1920s, after having actively participated in the Mexican revolution (just look up “soldaderas” to learn more about how they picked up arms and fought side by with the men). Acess to divorce (only under certain circumstances) came about in 1916. The Catholic church had such a sway over the population, attempts at supressing its power caused an armed revolt. Women were DEFINETLY not in a comfortable position. Just consider that until as late as the 1960s  the use of contraceptives was prohibited by Mexican civil law.  Culturaly speaking ,Mexico was, and still is, deeply sexist and conservative.
Now think about Imelda, alone with a 4 year old daughter in THIS environment. Imagine how difficult it was for her to open a business in a time period in which women had JUST gotten the right to vote, and the Catholic church and cultural norms still dictated that women should be submissive to their husbands and do nothing but care for the house and children. Imagine Imelda all alone with a small child and two younger brothers (who may not even have been of age then) trying to run a business in a time period in which political assassinations, armed rebellions and widespread violence were the norm rather than the exception.
Now consider this: Imelda was a young and beautiful woman, with a child and no husband, She CERTAINLY got unwanted attention from men. Men who could have been just regular guys, decent men who took a legitimate interest on her, but who just as well could have been former members of political factions involved in any of the armed conflicts popping up in everywhere in Mexico, or even just bad guys taking advantage of the general chaos to “seize their moment”
Think about all this for a moment.
Imelda didn´t just pull herself by her bootstraps (get it? ;) ) and started a successful business. She did it during a period of deep political, social and economic chaos and widespread violence. She did it as a woman. She did it as a single mother.
And that really put her forceful, domineering personality in context. She probably NEEDED to be like that to make sure her family was safe and sound. Is not like she had a choice but to be a overbearing, take-no-prisoners hardass. It was a matter of survival in the environment she lived in.
Imelda is probably one of the strongest, if not the strongest character in Disney canon, people.

I appreciated you apologizing to Silvia. Well, you totally know I only did it because I wanted to go out with you. I know, but all you had to do was apologize. Instead you were kind to her. I don’t think what I did was that cool. It was probably the wrong thing to do. Maybe she thought I was coming onto her again. No, she took it the wrong way when you invited her to Nathan’s party. I think it’s a little different.
