Blogged Pipers!

Well, I’ll be blogged! I might get so excited that I soil my laptop with a bunch of whacky Google keywords because I indeed stumbled upon quite the scene – this one is sure to come across more as a story in pictures than one in words. What the hell is this fool talking about? I’m talking about heaven. I’m talking about TOILET ROCK N’ FUCKIN ROLL HEAVEN! Read on:

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine was playing a show in Denver at a local dig called the Larimer Lounge. I’m new here in Denver and was excited at the prospect of hanging out with lesser-familiar folks (acquaintances I’d met back in 2013 at Burning Man + a few new faces), seeing one of which friends play at a small venue and drinking a few beers on a school night! Larimer is your typical dive with an open bar space up front hosting scattered regulars seated upon the usual rickety bar stools staring at their drink(s) or talking in muttered voices – you get the picture. Adjacent to the bar is a second room separated by a heavy black curtain (you know, to keep the front of house conversations clear and flowing or something). It’s a great place to try out those new chops on a small stage and have a party while you’re at it; in other words, it’s dark in there, really really dark.

After Zach Maxwell finished his set and our small school of fish started filing out toward the front entrance to chat and choke and cough over some local weed, “I gotta go pee” signals began to shoot off in my head. I’d been here awhile, awkwardly anticipating seeing these guys, drinking one or two(??) Colorado IPA’s, doing achy dancy feet shuffles and casually ignoring faces I absolutely recognized but couldn’t muster a “hello” for (I really don’t like to rush into things). Anyhow, I run back in and note that the toilettes are up a very long staircase, which I double step until I hit the top landing. What I walk into next can only be described as Blogged Pipes Heaven and that long staircase, the Stairway to . . . the bathroom (“no Stairway, denied“).

Everything, including the doors that are wide open for both ladies and gentlefolk, is caked with local band stickers, breweries, sports shops, tattoo artist brands, gang tags, etc, etc, etc. My eyes pop out of my head and dance all over the men’s room! Luckily I was alone and on my own to run up to toilets and sinks and give them all big sloppy hugs while licking them and proclaiming my adoration for each and every fixture. I didn’t though.

There’s something about corrugated steel, thousands of stickers and personal tags that really gets me every time. There wasn’t anything strikingly funny about the stuff I saw in here, but I thought it ambitious that so many boys crouched to eye level with the urinal AND the shitter to make sure they carefully and successfully placed stickers IN the toilet. I mean, there’s washing your hands after you pee, and there’s washing your entire soul. Side thought: I see “Wash Your Hands After Using Toilet” in some of the restrooms I visit, and I can’t help thinking or punctuating that with, “And For Extra Points, Wash Your Hands DURING Use of Toilet”! Hey, nothing would get created without freaks like me.
