modern au richie adhd/add headcanon
so i have ADD and my brother has severe ADHD and this headcanon is based around experiences we both had. just. better.
also modern au bc no one in the 80s would give this much of a fuck abt mental health
+so in class richie will speak out of turn
+or he’ll get up to sharpen his already sharp pencil for the 7th time within the halfhout
+he clicks his pens or chews on the pen caps
+he loses focus quickly to look out the window

+his teacher has no idea why this kid cannot sit still and be quiet for n hour so she tells him to sit in the hall til he feels like he can properly participate in class
+but it never works so she sends him to the school councilor.
+the councilor gets it pretty quick
+like it’s clearly some form of attention deficit.
+so the councilor says maybe richie needs to get prescribed addy or ridilin
+richie’s like HA as if my parents will take me to get prescribed anything
+so the councilor’s like aignt bet meet me here before class tomorrow.
+and so richie does and the councilor’s got coffee stir sticks, a two prong fidget spinner and he’s like
+“ok. if u feel like talking w/o raising your hand, u chew on a stir stick. if u need to click a pen u use the spinner.”
+then he walks richie to class and he’s replaced richie’s chair w/ one of those stable excercise ball chairs.
+and then things start changing
+his teacher notices he’s significantly quieter, he stays in his seat unless he has to.
+and it turns out richie’s a goddamn genius
+by 10th grade eddie manages to fake a prescription for adderall and starts sneaking it to richie
+and before ppl know it richie’s managing a 3.9 GPA and is awarded valedictorian
+and in his speech he shouts out his middle school councilor (who shows up to richie’s grad bc richie stayed in contact)
+and discusses the importance of learning disabilities and mental disorders and how any kid can be brilliant if u give them the tools to be
+then he swears and his mic is turned off and he’s played off the stage
+so basically richie’s brilliant as all shit he just needed someone to give a shit and figure him out
