5 Fascinating Facts About Direwolves You Might Not Know
Direwolves aren't just fantasy creatures from Game of Thrones — they were real animals that once roamed North America! Here are a few wild facts:
Direwolves were real predators. They lived during the Ice Age and were about the same size as modern gray wolves — but stronger and stockier.
They’re now extinct. Direwolves vanished around 10,000 years ago, likely due to climate change and competition for food.
Not the same as modern wolves. Genetically, they weren’t direct ancestors of wolves we see today. In fact, DNA shows they were a completely different lineage.
Their fossils were found in the La Brea Tar Pits. Over 4,000 direwolf fossils have been discovered there — making them one of the most commonly found Ice Age mammals in the area.
Pop culture brought them back. HBO’s Game of Thrones turned direwolves into icons, but the show took a few creative liberties with size and behavior
