to those who don't know, the onnagata is a type of role in kabuki theatre. kabuki is generally performed by all-male performance groups, and the onnagata are female roles played by male actors.

ayato is from a long line of kabuki performers, who take pride in their tradition. he trained diligently from a young age in an effort to make his father proud. as he started training, he discovered a love for feminine clothing and makeup, both traditional and modern. however, it is taboo to dress in feminine clothing outside of performances, so he was considered an outcast once he began to do so. this caused strain in his relationship with his father for a few years, but eventually, his father came around and offered him a gold hairpin in the shape of a heron to make amends for their conflict. the heron is a symbol that is associated with onnagata due to the heron dance, a kabuki performance wherein the onnagata plays a heron which has turned human and fallen in love with a man (has a tragic ending wherein the heron dies in the snow and is tormented in the afterlife for her forbidden love to a human). ayato has worn the hairpin every day since then as a sign of gratitude (you can see the tip of the heron's wing behind his head in this picture).

additional details:

he is a bisexual, cisgender man; pronouns are he/him, and he will correct people who mistake him for a woman, though he takes it as a compliment.

favorite color is red

the symmetrical beauty marks are real, not drawn on with makeup

i'm not sure where he fits in with the killing games, though i know that he would more likely be a victim than an assailant.
