January Music Review
Blue Quail Sound has thus far been highlighting one track of the week on social media channels. The goal here is to provide background information on artists, and delve deeper into one of their tracks. This is a new series of music reviews that is likely to recur on a monthly basis.
To kick things off is a song by the indie-pop band Tennis, titled Let's Make a Mistake Tonight. Tennis comes out of Denvor, Colorado U.S. They are the husband-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who formed the band in 2010 (Wikipedia). They have five album releases with a sixth one coming out this year called Pollen.
Let's Make a Mistake Tonight is a single that was released January 10, 2023. The songs dreamy vocal rests peacefully within a bed of mild chord stabs. It has a moderate beat which keeps the music rolling on its exploratory path. Its melodic synths shimmer and gently wobble to the sound of tape. The lyrics suggest taking an unpredictable ride and hoping for the best.
Quote from Alaina - "The thing I’m afraid of doing is usually the thing most worth doing. If I continue to do that throughout my life then I will have lived well." (https://www.undertheradarmag.com/interviews/the_end_alaina_moore_of_tennis)

Will music help me sleep?
Insomnia is major health problem in our society. Everyday stressors and stimulants keep us awake when we should be sleeping. Poor sleep is associated with a higher mortality rate due to reduced alertness, which can lead to deadly accidents. The body is also physically affected by a lack of sleep and increases hypertension.
So what can we do to aid ourselves to better sleep? According to researchers Galen Thomas Dickson and Emery Schubert (“Musical Features That Aid Sleep.” Musicae Scientiae, vol. 26), music can help. However, not just any music.
Many people assume incorrectly that the answer to a good nights sleep aided by music should include attributes such as having a slow tempo and a deep pitch. The researchers actually found that it was moderately paced music, at a pitch that was neither too high or too low worked best.
The next time that you are having trouble getting shut eye, give these tips a try. Have additional insights that you would like to share? Leave them in the comments.
