The Cleaner - The best non-foil deck at the time!
While I’ve been avoiding the Pokemon craze/resurgence, I can’t stop but smile when I look back nearly 20 years ago where I was just beating kids (and adults) senselessly at the Pokemon League. One of the decks I would frequently use was a budget deck that was absolutely amazing against the meta. Although the terms like “Anti-meta” or even “meta” weren’t part of the lexicon back then, it was extremely effective against Haymaker decks they relied too much on draw-power and Trainers to overwhelm average decks.
With “The Cleaner”, your deck relied on status effects and the tank-like stalling abilities of Lickitung & Magmar. Koffing would become a surprisingly effective hitter with it’s coin-flipping shenanigans that would often ruin just about anything. While you’re stalling, you can slowly build up your Arcanine until you have 3 prize cards left. Once you’re ready, switch out and just start 1-shotting and “cleaning” house for the win.
Most of the Trainers are self explanatory, especially with Energy Removals, however there was one specific trainer card that absolutely destroys Haymaker/Raindance decks.
The “rug” that tied the room together was actually Lass.
Lass was the equivalent of a “Mind Twist” from Magic: The Gathering given how Trainer dependent decks were. By playing a 1st turn Lass, you’re effectively wiping their hand and forcing your opponent to into top-deck mode, while trying to struggle with status effects and Energy Removals. It’s a lot to deal with, especially against adults that would deck out most of the time trying to come back mid-game.
Another great aspect of the deck was just how cheap it was to build. With zero foils, you could’ve easily traded away a random foil for a handful of the deck’s core cards.
While I’ve distanced my interest in Pokemon, I can’t forget those incredible weekend mornings with Lass & Arcanine.
