running off to hang out with his friends.
"are they still around here in the citadel?" he wanted slick to be comfortable in this arrangement, and if that meant he could go visit his friends while he was at work in the meantime, maybe that would be the best course of action. "i don't want you to feel trapped in the apartment while i go to work, so if they are still around i'd rather you let me know when you do leave so i don't get worried if i come home early and you're not around."
he then thought.
"do you have a cell phone?"

Okay maybe he was a little overexcited but he couldn't help it. It had been so long since he caught a break like this. Part of him was hesitant to go with him to work considering his own track record. Not all of his ricks had just sent him back after all. A majority had run into accidents. Accidents that earned the boy the nickname jinx.
"That honestly sounds nice. Usually the only breaks I got was when they were looking for a new rick to assign me to. That or when I would sneak off to hang out with my friends." They had been the only real family he had since his grandpa died.

the transformation of slick was of night and day, and not that rook was against it, in fact he was glad that he could see him being a good person--even if he himself still had nightmares of killing his old partner for him being so corrupted.
once he got into the car, he too buckled up but didn't start the car right away, instead he thought about the questions slick shot out at him.
"well, right now let's get you settled in," he didn't want slick to be subjected with the day to day shit that he did right off the bat. "we can talk about you coming to work with me if you want in a few days, okay?" that's when he started the car, already taking off to his side of the citadel.

"I know you're not. You're nice. Really nice. I got pretty lucky getting placed with you." It had been so long since he was given any affection from one of his ricks. So the pat on his head really meant the world to slick. As did the offer to sit up front with him. "Oh yes please!" He immediately took him up on it.
A giddy grin overtaking his expression as they made their way to his car. The boy happily strapping himself in. "So since you're a cop does that mean I'll be at your place most of the time or will you ask for my help with stuff? I've been with a lot of different rick so I've also filled different roles as a sidekick you know?"

he wasn't use to this kind of affection, but when slick hugged him, the taller patted him on the top of his head.
"hey, i said i was going to get you to a safe place, didn't i?" he said before kneeling down to look at slick in the eyes. "and don't worry too much about all that stuff, alright? i'm not like other rick's," if that wasn't obvious from the get go, he actually cared for those he deems family.
right now rook knew there were things in this morty's past, but he wasn't about to ask him about it. slick would come to him when he feels like it.
"i'll have to do paperwork, but right now let's get you settled in my apartment," he was already ushering slick out of the precinct and back into his car. "you can sit up front this time if you want."

Almost instantly the boy got up from his seat and pulled the man in for a hug. His grin as wide as ever. He couldn't remember the last time he was this happy. Not to mention relieved. "Thank you so much rook! I promise I won't disappoint you! I'll be the best morty you could ask for! I'll try my very best." At some point he would have to alert him of just why he was passed around to other ricks so much but that could be for another day. This was a night for celebration.

the investigator looked at both of them who seemed to want this more than anything and he just shrugged his shoulders and began to stand from his seat.
"alright, but know that you're going to be doing all the paperwork for this," he said to rook, who didn't seem to care in the slightest. he would do all the paperwork for all the ricks in this building if it meant he would get what he wanted.
"right sir! i won't let you down!" he saluted as the rick walked out of the room, leaving rook and slick to themselves. "i guess you got a new rick, huh?" he was definitely going to be ordering pizza tonight.

Slick's face fell at the mention of morty town. He'd never been there himself but he heard all the horror stories. He was worried if they dropped him there he'd be as good as dead or atleast struggle enough where he'd wish he was.
His expression instantly brightened up at not only the rick defending him but offering to take him in. It was like his luck was turning around for the better. He wanted to hug him but he didn't wanna upset his boss further. "Yeah! Him! I wanna go with rook! I choose him if you know I get a choice in this."

hearing all of this, rook wanted to get his hands on this rick just to show him a thing or five about how to treat their grandsons. but for now he would give slick a look of reassurance, knowing just how brave he was being right now.
"right, well," he set the notepad down to show the crude drawings he had been working on while slick was explaining everything. "your rick doesn't want anything to do with you anymore, saying you're becoming too much trouble for what you're worth." he said with a sigh, a hand running through his hair. "so we don't know what to do with you right now, you might be on a one way ticket to morty town."
and that's when rook couldn't hold his tongue.
"let me take hm in!" he said as he slammed down his hands upon the table, making the rick jump slightly. "i don't have a morty of my own," he's never had one if he were honest. "i could take him in."
"you sure that's what you want to do? you know his track record, right?" rick asked him as rook nodded, not giving a damn.
"i'll take care of him."

"I'm usually the reason he gets upset." He admits while rubbing the back of his neck. His rick had a bad temper and he was usually on the other end of it.
"He does all kinds of similar work. He likes to do experiments on me. You know to test his potions and inventions." He began glancing at rook to feel a bit more at ease.
Taking a breath he continued on. "To see how effective they are. So he creates these serums that act as painkillers for you know the process of going through said experiments. So I guess I can see why he was upset? But this time he got pretty extreme. I really thought he was gonna kill me this time."

if you were ever to kiss rook he would taste of coffee and rum, a bit of a minty taste to hm as well since he does take pride in his oral care.

"mmhm, mmhm," rick nodded as he took the pen and paper in his hands, doodling on it rather than taking notes. "so you were the reason that your rick got all upset, what exactly was in the serums to get him so worked up?" after all, it had to be something for a rick to get so violent.
"are you kidding me? who cares what the serum was, do you see the marks and bruises on the boy?" oh rook was on some thin ice right now yelling at his superior as he turned to the cop.
"you can either shut the fuck up, or leave, your choice."
at that rook toned it down, he didn't want to get thrown out of this place, he was suppose to be here for slick, that's wat mattered the most.

Yeah slick was definitely uneasy now. Sure rook was there but with all the shouting not to mention the more intimidating man across from him he was definitely feeling on edge now. "Oh geez okay." He said nervously before gulping.
"My rick he was working on one of his experiments. I accidentally bumped into the table and one of his serums fell to the floor spilling everywhere and he got really mad. More mad then usual you know? He got pretty violent."

once inside the station, rook knew just how many looks the both of them would get, from both ricks and morty's, what he wasn't ready for was all the screaming as they were in the interrogation room. but he would stay as close to slick as he could in this moment.
"i told you, it wasn't his fa---" a hand came up from the rick across the table before looking at slick, a scowl on his face.
"i want to hear his side of the story," he started as he took the cup of coffee from the table and sipped on it. "so, slick morty, what exactly happened between you and your rick?" he had a pen and paper, ready to write down everything that was important--which to rick's would be nothing especially from a morty who's already who knows how many ricks deep.

Slick felt a little nervous during the ride itself but that had nothing to do with how the man acted. If anything the rick was like a breath of fresh air. It had been so long since he'd actually been around a nice version of his grandpa. Either he came across ones downright abusive or ones who didn't wanna deal with him. Seeing the morty as a waste of space or a burden.
"Uh okay. I think I can do that." He gave the man a soft reassuring smile as he hopped out of the car. Soon following him inside. His expression soon morphed to that of nerves though. Both at having to talk about what happened worried he'd get his previous rick in trouble and the fact that the police station was so busy. He did however wonder just where this safe space would be.

it was the flinch that made rook feel even more motivated to get this morty a good rick, hell, he would take him in if that was the case. just anything to get this kid some help because just seeing the way slick moved from his hand--he knew he needed it.
sitting down in his chair once he got into the front seat, rook moved his rearview mirror a little to look at the kid, knowing that everything would be okay in the end, and if not--well he was a rick wasn't he?
once in the citadel he went straight for the police department, the hustle and bustle of this place never stopped, with the damn traffick it felt like ages in the car as rook hopped out with a stretch popping a few bones in the meantime.
"shiiiiiit, that was a long ride." he said to himself mostly as he shut the front door heading to where slick was. once he opened it that friendly smile was still adorned on his features.
"just need to get some statements for you and i'll be taking you to a safe place, alright?"

Slick was surprised by the way he said that. It was like he was serious. That he really wanted to help him. Did he just take his job really seriously or did he actually give a shit about him? He hadn't experienced that with a rick since his grandpa died. "Thank you. I mean I think I trust you a decent amount?"
He was a cop so he felt like he had to. Or atleast act like he did. Respect for the law and all that. Especially since he had gotten in trouble with the law a few times. Rebelling with his friends quite a bit. Stealing small things and generally going where they weren't supposed to as mortys. You had to be nice to cops when they could arrest you for a long time. Giving them attitude wasn't a wise idea.
Not to mention this guy was nice and as far as the morty was aware had no ulterior motives in helping him. He flinched at his touch but the apologetic look he gave the man tried to make it clear it was due to his own past abuse and not anything rook did. "Um okay." He agreed with a nod. Doing as the man asked.

"oh, it's you," rook sat up straighter as he moved slightly so angel could join him on the couch. "yeah, i could use it." he then looked down at the drink and swirled it.
"i don't have another bottle for you, so," he held it up for the other. "if you want some we're going to have to share."
"Woah... hey, seems like ya had a rough day bud. Mind some company fer abit?" The spider asked as he came up little closer to the other, seeming with a slight worried look.

looking at the bag and then back at the other, rook had to wonder out loud.
"a party for the hotel, or are we talking about a different party?"

“like hell im going to let that happen to you,” after the shit he’s seen in morty town, he was determined not to let that happen to slick. “i dont know how much you trust me right now, and i wouldnt blame you for not,” with all the ricks he’s been though he’d be surprised if his words even MEANT a single thing to him. “but i’ll be sure the court knows this isnt your fault.”
he pressed a gentle hand on slick’s shoulder, giving it a reaffirming squeeze.
“now, i do need to get you back to the citadel, so i would sit back in the car so i can close the door.” he would allow the young man to sit up front, but there were protocols to follow, and even innocent looking morty’s were known to kill, the scar on his shoulder was proof of that.

"Well um it's not that I don't believe you rook but this has happened a lot like I said so they're probably gonna be pretty upset that I went through another rick. I'm kinda getting close to getting no more chances with them." The unease was back but it had a different reason for being there.
"Maybe you can tell them this time it wasn't my fault? They've been stern with me lately. Said if I don't stick with a rick for once they might just send me to morty town so they wouldn't have to deal with me anymore."
