I found some old stuff on my hard drive that I did for a world building class at @conceptdesignacad years ago. I wish I could've finished but I had to leave the class early. I wanted to build a fantastical world based on Filipino culture. I wish I could remember more about this character but I remember he painted massive murals on the village's mountain-sides. And he had a crush on a mermaid😂. https://www.instagram.com/p/ByO5LqqHQyT/?igshid=4if708jdijcb

Some examples of final animation w/ the color keys I painted over the shots. Our lighting & comp team, led by GaoShang Zhang, would then realize these images beautifully for the final film! These particular shots were animated by @andrew_chesworth , @shaofu.zhang, with tech anim by @andrewtaylorjennings , and hair anim by Joy Johnson.

"Did you eat yet?" Ahh yes a common hello for Asian households. I love the idea of dinner tables being a place where, regardless of the madness of your day, a family can be present and connect. Mama P's specialties were her world-famous Grilled Cheese, Spaghetti, or Fried Rice! Another valuable thing I learned in that Schoolism class was how to construct different lighting setups using a neutral base. These were paintovers of a rough 3D layout, showing different times of day and different emotional states.

A few color keys I painted over some awesome boards by @andrew_chesworth . Before we started I was *terrified* because I didn't know a thing about color and light! So I took an amazing online Schoolism course by @dicetsutsumi and @robertkondo while on vacation in Indonesia. Honestly I still have no idea what I’m doing but I learned SO MUCH from them! Very thankful to those guys for being so generous with their knowledge.

A few boards from our final sequence! I haven't yet been to the moon but I remember my first day as an animator (after trying for years!) feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude thinking of everyone who encouraged me along the way❤️🙏. Hi Mom!

Some early design preparation for Dad. An expert shoe cobbler who supports Luna's dream the only way he knows how. I didn't grow up with a father figure but luckily I've met some incredible Dads that I could aspire to be like. Those are the kinds of people that inspired this character ❤️

This was done trying to get a feel for San Francisco Chinatown . That feeling of Eastern & Western cultures colliding matched Luna and her father’s relationship, and also spoke to our studio’s ambitions.

A few of the first drawings I did of Luna inspired by Liu Yang & Wang Yaping, the first 2 Chinese women in space. It's funny we never ended up seeing her in this uniform, but in earlier versions we showed more of her actual astronaut training, which we did a lot of research on. We decided to spend more screen time with the character relationship stuff but if you are interested , check out what astronaut candidates' training is like, amazing stuff! #thefutureisfemale

One of the first things I did when I joined Taiko was create a poster for our short film. It somehow feels more real when you have a poster =). Here are some early exploration ideas of what it could be, and what we ended up going with. Going for something simple and iconic. At some point we must've have had her going to Mars? Totally forgot about that!
