Hello I am here to shout out an INCREDIBLY under appreciated series for anyone who enjoys mlm romance or just a darn good book!

The Gives Light series is SO. FXCJIN. GOOD. No you don’t understand. It better than you’re thinking. It’s by Rose Christo and it’s a colorful, evocative series with beautiful characters that just draws you in immediately.

The backstory is tough. The main character, Skylar, has been mute since the age of 5, when he was injured the same night his mother was murdered. At the beginning of the book, Skylar’s dad goes missing, so Skylar goes to live with his grandma on a reservation in Arizona. Spoiler alert (but not really lol) he meets a mAns there named Rafael, and Gives Light is a story is about their love, and about Skylar connecting with his roots and finding a community and a “voice” if you will, all while looking for his dad and coming to terms with the death of his mother. The friends Skylar makes and the descriptions of nature and creativity and community are top tier, along with the fact that the story is a beautifully paced romance with pretty much everything you could want from a slow burn.

Gives Light is the first book in a six part series (all of which are incredible, and the latter books are a really sobering portrait of the Native foster care crisis as well), and the fifth book (Lending Light) is a retelling of Gives Light from Rafael’s perspective. Lending Light is, I think, my favorite book in the series because I just. Rafael’s character is one of my favorite characters ever. He is so hurt and so scared, but loves more deeply than almost any character I can think of, and has both an incredibly beautiful imagination as well and legitimately being magic. Think very Ronan Lynch vibes, for anyone who’s as big a piece of trc trash as I am.

Trigger warnings: It’s notable that pre cannon, Skylar’s mother was murdered by a serial killer on the reservation, and that the implications of grief and generational trauma from this event are very present themes in the book. There aren’t graphic descriptions of violence, (and I have a low tolerance for that sort of thing) but if this sort of theme is a trigger for you, don’t go in blind. There is also discussion of internalized homophobia and some references to homophobic language (also not graphic or very upsetting, but just so you know).

Just had to carry several grocery bags and a half full coffee cup in from my car. Was struggling to figure out how to make it work, and instead of anything helpful, my brain supplied me with, “you’re a smart little bagel, you’ll figure it out.” So now we know. My preconscious brain thinks I’m a bagel. A smart bagel, sure, but a bagel nonetheless.

My neurodivergent behaviors are typified by ending up on the highway at 2am without realizing I left my apartment, running two reds in a row, and going to four different closed grocery stores before ending up at a Walgreens 30 minutes from home because I had one (1), singular thought indicating that I really, REALLY wanted a mango popsicle.

Who is she.

Thing about Richard Gansey III I cannot and will not ever get over: his friends’ happiness is literally the most important thing in his world. His whole heart and soul depend on his friends being okay and being loved and being happy. And if that isn’t just the prettiest thing that ever there was, then I don’t know what is.
